The visiting Eagles quickly found out this was not the same Mount Zion team they had defeated the the last two seasons — and with only 26 players, North Cobb Christian’s lack of depth quickly became a problem.
“We made some fundamental mistakes that we can’t do, like having a punt blocked for the second week in a row. We had too many fumbled snaps and defensively we were too inconsistent and gave up too many big plays,” North Cobb Christian coach Harry Miles said.
Mount Zion coach Keith Holloway was happy with how the game played out. It was his team’s first victory since the 2009 season.
“We got our first win in two years and I’m extremely proud of that and excited,” said Holloway, shouting in celebration, as his team ran off the field.
Mount Zion led 33-0 at the half, but North Cobb Christian was able to move the ball better in the second half.
Kendall Crute scored a touchdown on a 20-yard run and Alex Ho-on connected with John Towns for a 56-yard touchdown pass.
“There were some positives. Obviously we were able to move the ball better in the second half,” Miles said.
North Cobb Christian (1-2) will now have a bye week to prepare for its next game against Cross Keys, and Miles said his team will focus on two main things in practice.
“We had a bunch of yards given up after contact, and conditioning,” he said. “Cross Keys is a very athletic team.”
