Mary Jean Whitfield, 95, died on January 23, 2014. She influenced many, and while her passing is a great celebration of a life well lived in Christ, she will be deeply missed. Mrs. Whitefield was a lifelong resident of the Marietta area. She was a member of Marietta First Baptist where she served as a Sunday School Teacher and as a member of the Library staff. Mary Jean was a founding member of the Anne Hathaway Garden Club. She retired from The Marietta Federal Bank. Mary Jean was preceded in death by her husbands; Howard Adair and Tom Whitfield; her parents: Jesse and Mary Upshaw; siblings: Elizabeth Townsend, Petty, James and Jakie Upshaw, and nephew, Mal Upshaw. Surviving are nieces: Melanie, Mary Louise, and Judy Upshaw, and Harriette Davis; nephews Bobby and Eddie Townsend; in-laws, Florence Jackson and Sam Whitfield; as well as many nieces, nephews, and their children from the Upshaw, Whitfield and Adair families. A memorial service will be held at the Marietta First Baptist Church Chapel on Saturday, January 25th, at 2:00 pm. Officiating will be Dr. Brian Upshaw, Dr. Bryan Whitfield, Dr. Bill Ross and Rev. Dean Hunter. A graveside service will be 1:00 pm Saturday at Kennesaw Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Marietta First Baptist Church building or library fund.
