DEAR EDITOR:

Re: Tuesday's Around Town column, "Dunn Deal Done For"

Commissioner Thea Powell demonstrated exactly what every Cobb citizen deserves, hopes and expects of their elected officials. She publicly questioned what seemed to be a bad idea and a bad deal for Cobb County and its taxpayers.

No matter what was possibly prearranged or agreed upon in the hallways of the commissioners offices prior to the meeting, she stood up and challenged the deal for all the right reasons. She's a hero and deserves ample recognition.

The fact that our new Chairman, Tim Lee, was surprised when she suggested studying the deal further and is now non-committal and can't decide on what position he'll take about a clearly stupid idea raises concerns about his leadership abilities. It didn't take much time and common sense for most of us to figure out that this was a bad idea. Maybe Thea Powell should change seats with him.

Sharon Dunn has been an exemplary and distinguished Cobb employee. It disappoints and surprises me that she didn't know better and would even consider being a part of such an apparent and unseemly arrangement. To make amends, an honorable thing would be for her to volunteer her services to help out during Cobb's November elections. I can't think of a better way to publicize her new business.

Thea Powell did the honorable, decent thing: Questioning the validity of a last-minute proposal, one aimed to further reward Dunn's mediocre tenure as Elections Director. (She wasn't even working most non-election days -- she was at home!)

What uninformed Cobb voters don't get is just how crooked the majority of our commissioners are.

Tim Lee ALWAYS rewards his buddies -- there's plenty of money going round when it's the taxpayers funds. Just think about Lee's attempted handover of the (pubicly-funded) Cobb Development department to the (privately-financed) Cobb Chamber of Commerce -- which was brought to light in June. Stupid Cobb voters still voted for him!

Folks, we "get the standard of performance we are willing to accept". And, with Tim Lee, if you don't watch and question him, then you get what you deserve -- more corruption!
