Vince Dooley, legendary head football coach of the UGA Bulldogs, and celebrated Southern artist Steve Penley, a UGA alum, kick off the football season at MCMA on Sept. 16 at 8 p.m. Fans are invited to the museum for a "Red & Black Tailgate Night."
"The Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art is very excited to have this pair of creative superstars together," said Executive Director Sally Macaulay.
Although Penley is known for his vibrant paintings of historical and popular figures, many might not know that Dooley is more than an athletic superstar. He is also a gardener who created a wonderful garden with the help of UGA horticulturalists at the home he shares with wife, Barbara.
Dooley will be on hand to sign his new book, "Vince Dooley's Garden," that portrays his love of gardening and includes paintings by Penley as well as more than 100 photographs of the yard.
"Both Penley and Dooley are great artists in their own right: Penley with his expertise in art and Dooley with his expertise in gardening and football," Macaulay said. "These two coming together at the museum is a blessing for us, and I know our community will not want to miss this rare opportunity."
Penley, who has previously exhibited at MCMA, returns to the museum and will also sign copies of his book, "Reconstruction of America," that includes paintings of historical and popular figures.
"I love the Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art, which is such an asset to the Marietta community. When I exhibited at the museum, I instantly felt such a connection with the people of Marietta and was so flattered by their response to me. I am excited to donate my time and talent in Marietta, people there like me - something that doesn't always happen," Penley said.
The book signing is from 6-8 p.m. Penley will have several pieces of art for sale. A silent auction will also be conducted, benefiting the MCMA and featuring UGA merchandise signed by Dooley.
Aerin DeJarnette will entertain on the front steps with live music. There will be food and a cash bar. It is free to the public. The museum is located at 30 Atlanta St. For more information, visit www.mariettacobbartmuseum.org or call (770) 528-1444.
