When Harry Miles looked at the Eagles' roster this year, he thought that Harris would be better playing at tailback and receiver.
Miles looks like a genius after the first win in North Cobb Christian history, a 26-8 victory over Mt. Zion-Carroll. Harris shredded the Mt. Zion defense for touchdown runs of 86, 91 and 45 yards to lead North Cobb Christian to the big win.
After the game, the North Cobb Christian players, coaches, fans and family members gathered for a celebration. All of the players attacked Miles and jumped up and down in unison.
"Words can't explain how this feels," an elated Harris said after the game. "We have worked so hard for this. I just felt it tonight. I talked to the offensive line before the game and told them that they needed to open holes for me. They did their job and I just felt something special tonight."
After falling behind 2-0 on a safety, North Cobb Christian never looked back against Mount Zion. Harris raced around the end from 86 yards out to put the visiting Eagles up 6-2 with 45 seconds left in the first quarter.
After holding Mount Zion on three plays to start the second quarter, North Cobb Christian extended its lead on a 52-yard touchdown strike from Christian Hunt to Matt Pile with 10:08 left in the opening half. Andrew Nuckolls' extra point made it 13-2.
Late in the second quarter, Harris struck again when he raced around the left end for a 91-yard touchdown run. Nuckolls extended the North Cobb Christian lead to 20-2 with just 1:37 left in the first half.
Neither team scored in the third quarter until Mt. Zion capitalized on a North Cobb Christian fumble deep in their own territory. The host Eagles recovered the fumble at the North Cobb Christian 13-yard-line.
Two plays later, T.J. Garrett scored from 6 yards out to cut the lead to 20-8 with just under three minutes left in the third quarter. The two-point conversion attempt failed.
However, Harris made sure that Mount Zion would get no closer after that score.
On a first-down play from the Mount Zion 45-yard line, Harris scored on a reverse to put North Cobb Christian up 26-8 at the 7:54 mark of the final quarter. The two-point pass attempt failed.
Miles said that the first win in North Cobb Christian history was both a relief and a joy.
"To tell the truth, that clock didn't run out fast enough for me," Miles admitted. "This is kind of surreal getting our first win. I'm so happy for these players. The only problem is that winning is the most addictive drug there is. Now that we've done it, we won't be able to get enough of it."
Harris finished the game with 256 yards rushing and the three touchdowns.
