Fields belong to public

DEAR EDITOR:

Sunday afternoon my wife and I went to South Cobb High School to walk the track and throw the ball around as we usually do for exercise. They have now locked the fields and the public cannot get to the track. I understand they got new football fields, but those fields were paid for by SPLOST, which is paid by taxpayers. These fields belong to us and we should be able to use them.

Also remember those HS principals who said (with a straight face) that the astroturf fields would be used by math classes as well. So... they're more than just parks. What a waste of money!

Can't wait for the county to decide we need another SPL0ST. I'll not only be voting against the next SPLOST, I plan to picket around the county so I can educate others.

David Banks said they were like extra park space and that justified the new artificial turf. Said the public could use them. More lies......

"What the?" said it well. There are plenty of PARKS for walking and throwing a ball. If you can't find them, then please ask for assistance from someone. Locking the football fields is not being selfish. They are intended for use by the high school teams. The coaches and parents put alot of time and money (not from the CCSD funds) into their upkeep. These fields need to be in excellent condition to make it safe for the student atheletes. I have picked up rocks, garbage, and thrown fertilizer on more than one playing field & practice field. As a parent of student atheletes, I know what happens to the fields when anyone, at any time can use them.

If an analogy would help you understand then try this-the high school buildings are public, but they are NOT left open for use by the general public 24 hrs. a day.

I, or we the general public rather, thought long and hard about your issue and have come up with an ingenious way for you and your wife to have an alternative to the local High School as a location for getting in your exercise.

It's called Sweetwater Park and it's just seconds west of the High School on Clay Rd. Whaddya think?

We put in 4, count 'em, 4 ball fields for you two to toss the ball around on!

If that won't do we've put together Legion Park, Frog Rock Park, Tramore Park, Lions Park and Wallace Park all within a couple miles of the school just for your convenience! Now there's some alternatives to walking a dull boring oval track eh?!

Give your wife a change of scenery. She'll appreciate it and start to realize you're truly a "can-do" kinda guy that's spontaneous and fun. Tell her "Honey! I wrote a letter to the editor and lookit what I got us!"

All kidding aside:

High School, middle and elementary athletic fields and facilities are not public parks.
