COBB COUNTY - Cobb Community Transit riders could face higher prices and fewer options.

At Tuesday's Board of Commissioners' work session, Cobb Department of Transportation Director Faye DiMassimo will present a proposal that includes a potential fare increase and reduction in service.

CCT has been the topic of discussion among county officials for some time, as the county looks to balance its budget and cut costs in today's tough economic climate.

"Cobb Community Transit (CCT) is facing significant budget shortfalls for Fiscal Years 2011 and 2012. To address these shortfalls, the Department is considering several ways to increase revenues and reduce expenses," according to the county.

County spokesman Robert Quigley said CCT will be asked to reduce its operating costs by $3 million. CCT is also being asked to reduce its service level by 5 percent, Quigley said. Local fare to ride a bus on the transit system would go up from $1.50 to $2 one-way, while express bus ridership would increase from $3 to $4 each way, Quigley said. CCT's current budget is $19.1 million, as the department calculated 4.5 million passengers during fiscal year 2009. Quigley said reduction in service could include eliminating Saturday service hours, cutting customer service hours, reducing ticket purchasing locations and/or closing customer service centers in Marietta and in the Cumberland area.

After DiMassimo presents the proposal Tuesday, the board is expected to approve scheduling public hearings to receive input from residents. Public meetings are tentatively scheduled to occur on Sept. 13 and 14 at the county's central library in Marietta, Quigley said.

Also being presented during the work session is the proposed FY 2011 county budget. The first public hearing for the budget is scheduled for Sept. 14, with adoption anticipated to occur during the board's Sept. 28 night meeting.

The board is expected to approve another extension on the county's temporary suspension of the acceptance of applications for Special Land Use Permits for cell towers. The suspension was originally approved on Jan. 26 to end on April 30, before being extended on April 27 to end on July 31. The county is preparing to amend its codes regarding cell towers.

I will on occasion ride CCT from the Arts Center Station to Marietta, after using MARTA from the airport to Arts Center. I would strongly suggest that CCT collect a fare for MARTA riders that transfer to CCT. This is the only city of which I am aware of basically a "free" ride between municipalities/counties.

I ride the public transportation system because I have No choice. It's too bad there are those like fallguyx who have no empathy for those who are disabled, elderly, or low-income and have no other way to get around. It's not just simply not having enough money to own a car. we're not all homeless folks, looking to case your neighbourhood; most of us are trying to get to work, school, entertainment, shopping church or some religious service,or to visit family or friends, etc. when the transportation system fails us, we have NO car to go back to, taxi's are too expensive, and often neighbours either avoid us or often take advantage of the situation-often asking more money than we paid for the bus fare (of course,we supposed to feel so eternally thankful anyone asked at all that we'll pay anything for a ride to a doctor's appointment or to return books to the nearest library). One idea I had was that if the Lottery can pay for Pre-K, than why couldn't the Toll be used to pay for public transit instead of more roads, more pollution, and fewer drivers who shouldn't be driving, but who had to lie to drive so they wouldn't lose their job because the transit system failed them. employers don't like to hire disabled riders because they say public transit isn't reliable. When p.t. cuts out bus routes, this just proves the employer right in not hiring the disabled. I've ridden p.t.32 years and have found MARTA to be a pain in the rear, particulary since the last two CEO's have squandered the money beyond what the economy has done to it. I hate fare increases, but I'd rather pay about $2 than to have no route near me and my neighbourhood-like my old one in Chamblee-would be just the route they'd cut. Find a wayto save the p.t. system or hire someone from the more successful system in Charlotte, N.C.to run it.

sorry Darth Tim - I'm having enough trouble paying my own bills - working and raising kids. You need to be paying your own and I'll pay my own!

1 extra hour of work, should cover the bus expense anyways!

I ride the bus everyday because I can't afford a car, like most folks that ride CCT. The fare hike is the second in recent years and is not fair.(No pun intended). Most people that ride the bus are poor and we be hurt most by the hike. It's like kicking a man when he's down. Transit should be supported by taxes and such, just like the health department, and other services for the poor. And for the guy that said the buses aren't full, you're an idiot. I take the bus too and from work everyday and it's packed!

Wow ... I am so glad to have a roommate with a car now! I rely on these busses and when riding the bus is more expensive than filling up my roomie's tank with gas it's gotten a little out of hand, don't ya think? We need better and more co-ordinated public transportation.

If it were not for the fed dime (tax dollars) that fiasco would have long since gone under-shut down CCT! On the bright side, it will look like a brilliant idea compared to that insane light rail you want to waste money on.

Are you trying to make me believe that CCT hauled an average of 12,000 riders per day?

I don't think so unless you include all special event and charter buses.

I have never seen even a half full bus arrive or leave their terminal on Marietta Parkway (Clay St. for us older folks).

Someone is fudging numbers!!!!

Those that ride should pay for it. I pay to drive my car the whole cost is paid by me. If you ride the bus then pay the price NO tax money should ever go to public transportation. I would use it if it where available in North Cobb on HWY 41. But it only goes to KSU and up 75. If they realy want it to work put it where the people are not the parking lots.
