MARIETTA - The parents of two young, obese daughters, who were living in a filthy home with mold, roaches, fleas and "gigantic spiders," have been arrested on felony cruelty to children charges, according to arrest warrants.

Police on Monday responded to reports of a domestic dispute between two brothers at the home on Dogwood Drive in Marietta, near Lower Roswell Road and South Marietta Parkway, Cobb Officer Joe Hernandez said.

When officers entered the home around 7 p.m., they found a 158-pound, 5-year-old girl and her 4-year-old sister, who weighs 89 pounds, police said.

According to arrest warrants, the 5-year-old had "head lice large enough to see while standing above the child," her teeth were "rotting out," her gums were swollen and she was covered in spider and flea bites.

"She is extremely obese and cannot walk 10 feet without becoming out of breath and wheezing," according to the warrants. "She cannot sit down without assistance, or stand up."

The 4-year-old "was found lying on a stained mattress with no bedding, wearing only a urine-soaked diaper," the warrants state. "The bottom of her feet were black from dirt, and she is also covered in insect bites ... Neither child is enrolled in school."

Police said the house stunk of urine and mold and was "infested with roaches, fleas, cobwebs and gigantic spiders."

The girls' parents, James and Anne Cordona, were taken to Cobb County Jail, where they remain. James Cordona, 31, has a $5,000 bond. Anne Cordona, 35, bonded out earlier this week, but Col. Milton Beck with the Sheriff's Office said she was rearrested Thursday around 7 p.m., accused of presenting misleading information at her first appearance hearing Tuesday. They both face felony second-degree child cruelty charges and misdemeanor charges of contributing to the deprivation of a minor.

"Both accused parties have neglected to seek medical treatment for either of their children," according to the warrants.

Cobb Animal Control also arrived at the house the night of the Monday arrests and found 18 animals living inside.

According to the Animal Control report, there was no clear evidence of animal abuse, but officials removed three dogs, two cats, two turtles and nine birds from the home. Police went back to the house around 1 a.m. Tuesday and removed a senior citizen and two more dogs from the home.

The senior citizen and the children are all in protective custody, Hernandez said.

I live in Cobb County and have a 2 year old. I cried when I initially read this story. I could never imagine my daughter going without or living in such conditions. I would rather not eat than see her the least bit hungry. These gross people should never see their kids again and be "fixed" so they don't bring anymore kids into the world. Bless these kids mental and physical health.

LUEK - there is as much evidence to convict you of being a non contributing , negative "citizen" as there is to convict these parents of neglect- overwhelming evidence, in both cases ! Your trial is taking place in the court of public opinion, however, and it looks like you should have pleaded , instead of going public in your trial which is impugning your reputation badly, by the way ; I rest my case ! "if they are moving they are lying" you said in refernce to police- sounds like you've had more than a few brushes with the law- may they protect us from criminal defendent mentalities like yours !

All of this is very sad. But how many of these outraged citizens are foster parents. Are you ready to take them in and care for these children? Are you ready to see to their physical and emotional needs? Have you contacted dfacs or a private agency to help the children that need help or do we just stand by shouting "Someone should do something". That someone could be you.

The law does not consider excessive weight gain as a form of abuse or negkect. This case will tax Mr. Head or Mr, Morgan o their estremes to prove the vilations of the laew. ALTHOUGH THE LICE AND BUG BITES ARE THERE i THANK gOD THAT THEY ARE AS THIS NAY BE THE ONLY EVIDENCENOF CRUELTY IN THIS CASE. THE LEGISLATURE NEEDS TO RE-WRITE THIS LAW.

This is so disgusting that the neighbors knew, the sister knew, yet not ONE called and reported it? Shame on them ALL. They should all be arrested and charged right along with these so called parents. This is INEXCUSABLE. I surely hope these babies get all the help they need, and NEVER get to see these people again.

My comment is directed toward "Luek" maybe that was supposed to be "Luke". You are a very negative person. Your comments on police are sickening. If you or your family ever become the victim of a crime-don't call your local police dept.

You need a license from the state to cut hair, drive a car, own a gun, own a business.

But any idiot can be a parent and mistreat that child.

What a shame.

I feel for those children.

Luek....your comments are absurd. There is absolutely no reason why the 4y/o is not enrolled in a lottery funded Pre-K program...FREE. In addition, the 5y/o should be in kindergarten. Public schools have kindergarten and they are also FREE. As far as medical care, Georgia provides free medical care for children of low income families. These are programs such as Peachcare and Medicaid. Having no money is no excuse to neglect your children...NONE! The fact is...you can be flat broke and still provide adequate care for your children!! I have absolutely no tolerance for excuses or blaming.

@ Luek--from your comments, I'm guessing you would try to rationalize and explain away just about anything. The parents may have mental health issues and be unable to properly care for their children, but I don't see how anyone could think that their children's living conditions are okay.

The Sheriff's website shows the female had bonded out earlier this week before she was rearrested own her own recognizance, as allowed by the judge. What's up with you Cobb County judges! What recognizance does this person have. Both of them should be behind bars on at least a $50,000 bond each, and they shouldn't get out just by signing their names. I'm sure they couldn't get credit on their signatures; why should they be trusted to come back to answer for crimes just on that.

I dare say that the parents' jail cells are cleaner, and the food more nutritious in jail than at the "home" of these children. This makes me ANGRY! I would do everything in my power to make sure my children had clean clothes, bedding and nutritious food...even a can of soup is better than twinkies (for about the same price). Ignorance is at work here. These "parents" more than likely grew up the exact same way. People like this do not deserve to have children. I had three boys. One died of leukemia when he was 3. One drowned while swimming when he was 21. My 18 year old is my life. Children are precious gifts, they surely don't deserve to live worse than most people's pets.

Judge, have some backbone and sentence this trash to sterilization. Plenty of citizens would be just fine with them being allowed to waddle around free after that.

There's no reason why the children can't be in a GA Pre-K program or Kindergarten (depending upon their birthdays).

What a shame that parents would allow such filth in their homes.

this is a chance for the dfcs system to work like it should. these girls need to be put into a place where they can get the care that they need. at 4 a child should be potty trained and both girls need to live in a home that's clean and healthy for them. they need to go to the doctor to have blood tests to find out if their weight is the rsult of a medical condition. the cops did the right thing removing these children from their parents. some people should never have kids!!!

I agree w/ fed up! There are countless 'squalid' trailer parks, apartments & neighborhoods all over south Cobb County! Atlanta Road, yes,... but those are just the highly visable ones! Try riding down Gray Road, off of Smyrna-Powder Springs. How 'bout the 1000's of homes around Sandtown & Pat Mell. You've got houses that have 4-5 grown men packed w/ little children,.. all packed into 3/1's. But NO-ONE dare keep a watch out,... you might have to EXPOSE Cobbs dirty little secret of illegal alien invasion!

(you know, the East Cobb folks don't really care WHERE or HOW these illegals live,.... as long as they get a good price on lawn care!)

We only have the word of the police about this.

Usually, the abused children are malnourished. This doesn't seem to be the case here obviously.

The obese children could have a medical condition that contributes to their obesity.

Also, the article states that neither of the girls are enrolled in a school. Hint: Five and four year olds are not supposed to be in regular grammer schools. They could be nursery schools or even kindergarten if the parents could afford it and these particular parents probably do not.

Bug bites? Who knows? The police often exaggerate the situation to jusitfy their interference in people's personal lives.

So, I guess it is now a crime to not support your kids on the level of a well to do family?

Clue: Just because the police say it doesn't make it a true fact! Also, remember the old adage that you can tell if a cop is lying by watching his or her lips. If they are moving they are lying.

There is no excuse for what has happened to these girls. None. I think they should be charged with attempted murder because at 158 and 5 years old if something isn't done quickly she will not live another year or so. DFCS, don't get stupid here and send them home to live with a relative who will just give them back to the family.
