DEAR EDITOR:

I am anxious to believe that the majority of Muslims in the United States are patriotic citizens. The controversy over building a mosque near Ground Zero could be virtually eliminated by adding a memorial with a plaque on the grounds in remembrance of the lives lost and condemning the actions of the terrorists responsible. This could be accompanied by prominent U.S. Muslim leaders appearing on national media affirming their support for the United States of America and condemning the terrorists.

As long as I hear only the president and other non Muslim leaders tell me how Muslims as a whole are as loyal Americans as I am, I will remain skeptical. I am left to wonder if the U.S. Muslim leadership is afraid of alienating a significant portion of their congregations or live in fear of repercussions from Muslim terrorists if they speak out in support of our government? Every time there is a life lost to a Muslim terrorist, we should see a prominent member of the Muslim community condemning the act of the terrorists and asking Muslims worldwide to unite in the war against terrorism. If U.S. Muslims support our government, let me hear it from them.

Indian Joe you are proof that the greatest threat to America is not International terrorism but domestic ignorance.

Indian Joe: Obama is not an Muslim, despite your and the right wing nut's effort to portray him as such, and even if he was, so what? isn't America built on religious tolerance?

Secondly, Richard Schick says all should be alright if terrorist placed a plaque of responsibility at the sight..why shouldn't the Israeli government that killed American troops on the USS Liberty ( an act of state sponsored terrorism ) do the same, and provide a "plaque of responsibility" for their actions.

Once again my comment is directed toward Kim Huffman: have you lost what mind you may have been born with? You remind me of a "co-conspirator".

Kim, What in God's name is your comment supposed to mean, adn how is it even pertinent to this letter or the issues involved. Sounds like you have too much time on your hands, and are willing to say or do anything to support "your" president. If he had come out against the building of this mosque (fat chance since it is his religion), I am sure you would have some opinion in support of that position. How about making your comments on subject

Better yet - why don't the Muslims, say - we understand the victim's concerns and we want to consider them - we will build our building elsewhere.

These Muslims just want to alienate.

Could we also get one of those plaques from the Israeli government condemning the killing of Americans troops by the Israeli military on the USS Liberty?..sounds only fitting if you are wanting mea culpa's and condemnation.
