MARIETTA - The Cobb County school board will have team-building training Saturday, although the board members were vague about what would be covered in the two-hour session.

Hosted at the Marietta law firm of Brock, Clay, Calhoun and Rogers, the board's training session will be on Saturday morning from 9 to 11 and all of the board members say they plan to attend, except for Dr. John Abraham, who said Thursday he might not make it since he will be out of town. The board's new attorney, Clem Doyle of Brock Clay, will also be in attendance.

David Morgan, the organizer of the session, said he asked the board during their July meeting to get together in accordance with recommendations from SACS, when they evaluated the district last November, and to help the board to continue to work as a team.

"Continually assessing where we are as a board and what we can do to improve is a good thing, even if we hadn't gotten that recommendation from SACS," Morgan said.

Although Morgan said he requested the training, he did not say he would be leading it. Instead he said he would "facilitate" board members' conversations and offer various team-building exercises, but did not elaborate on what the exercises would entail. When asked what qualified him to lead the board training session, Morgan said he doesn't think he has any special credentials other than being a board member.

Vice-Chair Holli Cash said she would be at the training and that it was her understanding it would be a little like the team-building retreat in March with the Conflict Resolution Academy.

"We're doing what SACS wants us to do, and we're trying not to spend any money," Cash said.

Dr. John Crooks, who will be leaving the board when his term is up at the end of the year, said he is looking forward to "two phenomenal hours of team-building" on Saturday. Although Crooks is in his final months as a board member, he doesn't see it as a waste of time to do team-building activities with his fellow board members.

"I signed up for four years and I am a board member and I need to fulfill my responsibilities," he said.

Morgan said Thursday that anyone from the public would be welcome to attend the board training on Saturday at Brock Clay law offices at 49 Atlanta St. Southeast, off the Square in Marietta.

While I agree that this is a farse, I will say that it's cheaper to do it there then start the air conditioning at the central office of a school.

What these clowns need is an attitude adjustment from an old school drill instructor like the one I met at 2:30 in the morning at Ft. Benning in 1967.

I know my attitude was adjusted in about 5 seconds!!!!!

About time legal services went out to bid rather than perpetually with Brock, Clay.

This "team-building" effort is simply Brock and Clay's last ditch effort to "sooth over the waters" by presenting the board with a different attorney to prevent the CCSD from rebiding their contract.

The NEW board needs to bid out for a NEW law firm AND hire a NEW superintendent AND rewrite the CCSD policy outlining how the NEW superintendnt is to work for the NEW board who represent the people.

Guess who?

Question #1 Since this team only has 4 more months of working together, and we will have two and maybe three new board members, what is the point of this?

Question #2 How much are we, the taxpayers, shelling out for the use of the law offices and Mr. Doyle's time?

Question #3 Since when has this board taken and constructive criticism to heart?

Question #4 When will this circus end?

my husband was furloghed 5 days, so what does the county do, extends the time of the school day to make up for the 5 days teachers won't get paid. Pretty slick, get the 5 days back at no cost to the county.

Team building exercises really make me chuckle. From Corp America to our school systems. Shouldn't we be mature enough to work as "a team" once we graduate college? Maybe they should start teaching this in schools so that adults can work as a team without the need to paying for courses to teach them how to work as a team.
Question?

Who's in charge of facilitation while they're

waiting for Mr. Morgan to show up, and does the

County pay for their gas if they have to meet

him at a tennis court in S. Cobb?

wonder if Mr. Morgan will show up on time to this since he can't remember actual board meetings?? Or if he will spend half the time on his phone like he does at board meetings? Why is he pretending to "facilitate" this? he is obviously a board member in name only or to further his wife's career.

After this article I'm imagining all the schoolboard members at a "Bob, Carol, Ted, and Alice" type relationship retreat . . . Let's see what becomes of this "team building" activity.
really? really?

Sanderson hides information from the board and the public. Brock has trouble getting the law right. Morgan has trouble getting to school board meetings. Yet SACS says Cobb School Board should have more team building? What a useless organization.

And so we begin racking up more to add to the $2 million they have charged. Yes, sure, this makes total sense to me......

This is ridiculous. Why would a team building session need to be held at a law firm's offices? There are plenty of trailers that lay vacant across the county on Saturday mornings. Why not meet in one of those? Shoot, they're even double-wides! Plenty of room for the board to "team build".

The only thing that can come from this is for the illustrious firm of B,C to coach the school board to become more prolific litigators.

Will the school board be paying for Mr. Doyle to participate? Will the law firm also have additional charges to hold it at their office? Maybe I think illogically, but why can't these adults act like professional adults and do the job they are paid to do without a team building exercise?

"Continually assessing where we are as a board and what we can do to improve is a good thing, even if we hadn't gotten that recommendation from SACS," Morgan said.

How about showing up to meetings on time and PARTICIPATING, Mr. Morgan? That would be a good start for improvement. We need to see more leadership from you than you've shown the past 2 years.

"We're doing what SACS wants us to do, and we're trying not to spend any money," Cash said...I have NEVER known an attorney or law firm to do something for "free" during a "meeting" like this..there will be a "fee" somewhere in the next month or so for this session....
