Stine tarnished, but would make good leader

DEAR EDITOR:

The MDJ recent wrote an article about District 3 Northeast Cobb Commission candidate Earl Stine. We feel his reputation was tarnished by that article. True, Earl was convicted of a traffic incident. He reacted to a situation after a person in a SUV with dark-tinted windows twice tried to run him off the road. Earl feared for his well being, but admits that he over-reacted, has paid his dues and has moved on to make Cobb a better place to live.

Stine is a family man, dedicated Christian and president-elect of his Rotary Club. Earl is community minded, helps those in need and is generous with his time and assets. A U.S. Army veteran with a good record, we feel Earl Stine would make Cobb County a good and faithful commissioner.

I do know JoAnn personally, and have for over 10 years. She has been more active in our community than anyone else I know. She's been a leader for years in many different community groups, just check her website. It's also a bad rumor that she is "in Tim Lee's pocket." She's been involved with issues that affect our area long enough to make her own decisions without influence from another commissioner. She is a great person, conservative in her political beliefs and a steadfast Christian. She is definitely the better choice.

Earl didnt have any "skeletons" in his closet!! The matter is public record. Its common knowledge!! Its not hidden. Now if there was anything else out there and it was hidden, that would be a "skeleton" and his answer would then be a concern. He has not hid it so why not say no when asked. He has been open and honest in answeing questions regarding it. Imagin, an open honest candidate!!! How refreshing!! I would love to know how many "skeletons" MS. Birrell would have come out given her lobbyist background and the potential for major conflict of interest. Mr. Stine is an open, sincere and concerned citizen whos only motivation is to serve his constituants. You cannot beleve that Ms. Birrels' motivations are as selfless. She is a registered lobbyist and her motivations are "suspect" at best. I support Mr. Stine and urge all other concerned voters to do the same.

They are both untrustworthy of serving the county. Bobblehead Birrell and Convict Stine will both do a terrible job for district 3. Birrell will just nod her head in whichever direction King timmy lee tells her and Stine will probably be wearing a 6 shooter to the meetings to wave at anybody that questions his actions. Oh good grief.....write in moon.

To the Chances are/ Jolly ranchers of the world:

When you write to, speak to, otherwise approach a county commissioner trying to influence his or her vote on an ordinance ( including zoning), you are doing the same thing a lobbyist does. The only difference is they get paid, and you may not. (If, however, more than 250 dollars a year changes hands via such activities, then you ARE a lobbyist, and need to register with the state... so big deal 250 dollars is all that separates you from the dreaded lobbyists).

Somehow I can't see the crime in being a "lobbyist". If this is the only drum you can beat in your support of Mr. Stine, then you clearly don't have anything of substance to say.

I don't know either of these candidates personally, but Stine's "shortcomings" are known & public knowledge. Birrell's promises as a lobbyist are not. Lobbyists ask for favors from legislators and offer something in return. And that is suppose to make Birrell a more credible or upstanding candidate? Not hardly!

To Pleez-You ask about Stine's experience. Do you really think that Birrell's lobbying experience for WM makes her better? Pleez!
Say No to Stine

Stine just got off probation in 2009 and had to go through an anger management class. He is dangerous and a convicted criminal. The MDJ didn't tarnish his record or reputation. He did when he committed the crime. They just stated the facts and could have made it worse if they wanted to. I'm voting for JoAnn. She has the experience and track record to get the job done. No criminal record here. And no skeletons to hide.

I agree with these gentlemen. Stine made a mistake of judgement in a traffic situation and has paid dearly for it. I wish he'd behaved differently then and was more forthcoming when announcing his bid for office. That aside, I believe EVERY other aspect of this man's life has shown him to be the kind of person we want to have representing us on the Commission.

Birrell, on the other hand, has some SERIOUS conflict of interest issues and tiptoes around the ethics enough to make me question whether she will have my best interest at heart when governing.

My money (and my vote) is on Stine. I would prefer to hitch my wagon to someone who has made non-political mistakes in the past that had nothing to do with ethics (and who has repented for them) rather than someone who most likely will serve special interest on the Commission.
Kidding!

You have to be kidding me! If he was so afraid for his life, why didn't he call 911 instead of waiving a gun at the other car? He was armed, the other man was not! Earl didn't need to call 911, the innocent victim had already called as he feared for his and his children's lives! Earl pleaded guilty to a lesser charge. Innocent people don't plead guilty! When aksed by the MDJ if he had skeletons in his closet, he said, "NO." How can anyone trust him? He served probation for two years....Who tarnished his reputation? I think he needs to look in the mirror!

Excuse me but he was indicted on felony charges for waving a GUN at another driver with kids in the car. Not just a traffic incident by any means. Being a family man, Christian and Army vet doesn't necessarily qualify him to be a commissioner. Where's his experience? What has he done for the last 10 years?
