EDITOR'S NOTE: Below is a selection of responses shared by readers of MDJOnline.com in reaction to recent MDJ stories ...

Cobb school audit process under fire ...

Dustoff wrote - So what did you voters really expect the answer to be? The district is run day-to-day by Superintendent Fred Sanderson and the BOE today are just bobble heads who are required to vote on certain matters despite them not having a clue as to what they are voting on. The new BOE needs to step in and take over the day-to-day operations or sit on their hands with their heads buried and let the staff continue on their merry way as before.

Read fine print! wrote - Once again, read the policy and note the CEO Linkage System, which is an adverse gatekeeping system set up by former Superintendent Joe Redden. Under such policy the superintendent is the executive secretary of the Board, the CEO of Cobb schools, executive secretary of the board of ethics, a member of the audit committee, custodian of all school board minutes and has access to spend money on contracts without the Board's approval.

Brock Clay Watcher wrote - You need to do some research. In addition to the contract, how much money is paid to Brock & Clay for services not covered by the contract?

My my wrote - Sanderson and his school board cronies are screaming like scaled dogs about this simple story. Instead of criticizing the newspaper, why doesn't he just tell us why he didn't bid out the smelly contract for legal services that his buddy Glenn Brock has had for over 20 years.

Tell us Fred wrote - The business school law professor says it is a gross conflict of interest for Sanderson to hire his own auditors. Of course, it is to everyone but our clueless board members. Also, why did Sanderson bid out the small audit contract but didn't recommend the board bid out Brock's multi-million dollar illegal and tainted contract? Perhaps our super had a senior moment.

Anonymous wrote - Typical MDJ tactic: find an "expert" willing to question something on the record, then put the target - usually the CCSB lately - in the position of defending themselves. So, when did you stop beating your wife? The MDJ's relentless "gotcha" journalistic style is offensive and pandering. And I'll be surprised if this makes it to the site.

World B. Free wrote - Bravo anonymous. You have captured what a lot of us feel. The never ending pursuit of something, anything that will make the largest employer in Cobb a villain. It's exhausting and tiring. Not even entertaining anymore. Thanks for your sentiments. You are not alone!

Curious One wrote - Professor Schulzke, I fear that your concern is over a minor issue considering the performance of the "worst ever" school board. This board collectively would not know a wicket from a digit when dealing with control and audit issues. Most of the actions of this school board are out of control. Thoughtless and baseless!

Nothing has changed wrote - Nothing ever gets better with the CCSD. Sanderson is still hiding important information from his board and the public.

Think, think wrote - For Sanderson and his staff hiring the auditors is like teachers doing their own evaluations. Get real.

Too simple wrote - Go for the big bucks, Fred and bid out the Brock Clay contract.

Are we surprised? wrote - Is this a little like the fox guarding the hen house? How impartial is this audit going to be? CCSB do your job. We don't have enough money to pay teachers, you need to make sure what little we do have is not wasted and covered up!

Hey Fred wrote - Why not be consistent and you and the Board put out the $2 million yearly Brock Clay contract for bids?

To Spent Where

When this Cobb County School District problem blows over -- and it eventually will -- there will be an exodus of many talented Cobb County teachers to Cherokee and nearby counties. Too many Cobb County teachers have had it. Cobb laid off and failed to rehire teachers who had no problems on their evaluations. Cobb then turned around and hired new, untrained teachers straight out of college.
Spent Where?

In another article a blogger wondered why the Cherokee County school system is still able to buy new buses, did not have a mass layoff of teachers and does not have as many furlough days scheduled so far for this coming school year. Could Cherokee be doing a better job of living within their means.

For example-paying more reasonable legal fees, not having to defend the school district against numerous lawsuits, not as many high paid "administrators" at the main office, and not spending for low priority items like tracking devices for bus drivers, which in turn could be spent on some new buses.
