Cobb Public Safety Director Mickey Lloyd submitted his resignation Friday afternoon, and County Manager David Hankerson has accepted the letter, county officials confirmed at 3 p.m.

Lloyd put the letter on Hankerson’s desk at 1:15 p.m. Friday and the resignation is effective immediately, county spokesman Robert Quigley confirmed.

In Lloyd's letter, he calls his resignation a "Retirement Announcement" and states, "at this time I am retiring and have tendered my resignation to the County."

The following is the entire contents of the letter the Journal obtained through an Open Records Request:

RETIREMENT ANNOUNCEMENT

"I have spent almost 40 years in law enforcement devoting all my energy as well as my official and personal time to protecting and serving the residents of our state including the last seven years serving as the Public Safety Director for Cobb County.

In my various law enforcement capacities I have always enjoyed a reputation for honesty, truthfulness, and integrity. Recently, I have been the subject of attacks by the news media and various officials concerning my military service which has distracted me from providing my full time and efforts to serving the residents of Cobb County as Director of Public Safety.

I certainly could continue to take time away from my position to fight these accusations but the individuals who will ultimately suffer are the members of our Public Safety Department and our residents.

Therefore, at this time I am retiring and have tendered and have tendered my resignation to the County. It has been an honor and a privilege serving the residents of Cobb County.

This 30th day of July, 2010.

Gary Michael Lloyd"

Well that is really interesting. Bieng a vet who was harrassed about my service in cobb fire this does not surprise me. I am still proudly serving my country but was told i could not serve the residents of cobb county.I want all cobb residents to know the officers on the beat and firefighters are great but the leaders are all corrupt and are not to honerable. Keep supporting the troops they need it especially when they come home i was not given that treament at all.

Yup, there's more to this story which will likely come out in the near future. Some real shenanigans over Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd and reporters are digging

"This is Crazy" is the crazy one. Mrs. Lloyd DID NOT meet the minimum qualifications when she was hired. She met these qualifications over time AFTER she was hired, over several overly qualified applicants within & outside the county. Something has been rotten in denmark for quite some time.

"This is Crazy," getting qualifed after the fact doesn't count. Maybe you should submit an application somewhere you're not known or credentialed and see what happens. You have to be kidding if you're telling me you're willing to turn a blind eye to the root. Wow, please tell me you don't vote because we certainly don't need someone like you choosing any of our governmental leaders.

I found an interesting link between Mrs. Lloyd and the former Cobb Public Safety Director Mickey Lloyd, which should've sent up a red flag. If you read her bio, you'll see she worked in the Georgia state homeland security office, which coincidentally so did Mr. Lloyd. I guess it's safe to assume there's a few more skeletons in the Cobb closet that could eventually come out.

We'll send the liars and cheaters to your county, so they can take positions of employment they weren't originally qualified for and seat them over those employees who spent years in their respective fields and who are well qualified. You can have them and I hope you get them. I guess the shoe won't fit so good if it's you, your friend, or even relative who is overlooked because of a backdoor hiring that looks like is what took place in Cobb County. I can't imagine his wife staying in Cobb County very much longer because her credibility has to be destroyed now that her husband is no longer the Public Safety Director.

To Dont_Be_Fooled- You have no idea what you are talking about. "His wife" is more than qualified for the position she holds and has done a fine job with every disaster that has been thrown at her. Two major ones being helping hurricane Katrina victims as well as dealing with the mess the recent flood caused. If you are so high and mighty maybe you should go do all of these positions you are saying these people aren't "qualified" for. All of you citizens of Snobb County need to be careful. You are going to end up kicking everyone out of office who actually does the job credibly and put people in who have no idea what the heck they are doing.

Now someone needs to look into his wife's hiring because it has been rumored that she was not qualified at the time of her hiring for the position she currently occupies as the Emergency Management Deputy Director. Well news media, how far are you all going to dig to get the bottom of Cobb's good 'ole boy system? Hmmm, didn't David Hankerson hire them both? Seems like there's a trend there. Will we see his exit next? I think we're beginning to see the Board of Commissioners doing some housecleaning.

Such a disgrace to all those who earned their decorations and especially to the fallen veterans.

After the appeal process has expired, Manager Hankerson needs to finish the job by cleaning out the desk of ex director Lloyd and taking his picture off of the wall in Police Headquarters. Lloyd does not belong on the same wall as Hightower ! Honorable service does mean something !
Thank You

You are respected by so many for being such an unpretentious person. Everyone who matters KNOWS what kind of person you are. You have done so much for our community and you are loved and appreciated by so many. Thank you for all that you have done and enjoy your retirement. God bless you!

It is his defiance, combined with the real lack of details, that makes him seem so guilty of embellishing his service.

His attorney and somewhat condescension in that news conference did not help matters. Does he believe he's the only vet around? Doesn't he know the REAL guys are among us? Yet he blames the media.

As has been said: if he was real, he would not mind the inquiries. And he'd be able to produce all sorts of stuff to prove him right. And I'm not talking about a "made in China" fake SEAL coin.

I am a US Navy Vietnam veteran who did my job over there and was awarded a few low level medals, mostly just for being there, but I knew a few people who gave their lives. Some were awarded medals posthumously. If it is proven that Chief Lloyd won a Silver Star, which shouldn't be hard to prove, I will salute him. If he lied and cheapened the medal for the brave warriors who earned it, he should hang his head in shame for the rest of his life.

First, I don't condone lying, falsifying records or giving misleading information but since Vietnam a lot of veterans and pseudo-veterans have stretched the truth about their service.

Frankly, I can't count the number of people I've met over the years that told me that they were a Green Beret or Navy SEAL in Vietnam. I've had people much younger than me look me in the eye and tell me they were in Special Forces, in Vietnam! They'd been 14 or 15 years old. Even the former governor of Minnesota claims to be a SEAL in Vietnam and he's younger than me. Go figure. What makes it so troubling is that it takes months of training to be a Special Forces member and they don't recruit in basic training. They want people with military experience but yet these guys that spend on two or three years in service make these claims.

The problem is that Hollywood has overblown this Special Forces thing and many guys that went to Vietnam feel less about themselves because they were not part of this "Big Screen" story. So they feel the need to embellish their record. The true fact is that if you served in Vietnam that should say enough, period. Vietnam was hell. It was hell going there and it was hell coming home and being a Vietnam veteran.

I don't know Mickey Lloyd. Never met him but if he served honorably in Vietnam then I salute him regardless of his war stories and memories.

I'm sorry to see you go sir. I believe you have served Cobb County with great integrity and your leadership will be missed. It will be felt in Cobb County for years to come my only hope is that the County elected officials and the one appointed official we have left may not have the honor or integrity to shoulder the job. That is where the citizens of Cobb County must step up and vote or demand true professionalism from their County leaders.

I"m very sad to see this man's career come to an end this way. He ran a good department, but I believe he needed to go under these circumstances.

Well Mr. Lloyd if you would have told the truth then you would not have people on your case and you were not attacked by the news media and other officials.

You were called out by the honest and real military veterans, along with POW Network and Stolen Valor, all of whom you disgraced. I hope you are ashamed of what you did but I doubt it.

I just hope the Feds come after you, that you deserve!!!
