Cobb County Public Safety Director Mickey Lloyd turned in his letter of resignation this afternoon, sources close to the issue have told the Journal. The county will neither confirm nor deny Lloyd’s resignation at this time.

Lloyd put the letter on County Manager David Hankerson’s desk around 1:15 p.m. today, sources said. There is no confirmation yet on what was included in the letter or if the resignation is effective immediately.

His resignation comes almost six weeks after the Board of Commissioners received a letter from Byll Davis of Vinings accusing Lloyd of lying about his military career. Lloyd has repeatedly been introduced at speaking engagements as being a Navy SEAL during the Vietnam War and winning various medals, including the Bronze Star, Silver Star and Purple Heart. Lloyd said Wednesday he never claimed to be a SEAL or to have been awarded a Purple Heart but that he has won the Silver Star and Bronze Star. Lloyd’s official military records obtained by Hankerson only proved Lloyd received the National Defense Service Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal, with no SEAL experience.

Lloyd was hired as the county's public safety director in January of 2003. Prior to his service in Cobb, Lloyd served two years as deputy commissioner of Homeland Security. Lloyd retired as deputy chief of the Atlanta Police Department in 2000 after 29 years of service to the department.
