THE MARIETTA SQUARE is painting with a new brush with the return of First Friday Art Walk for the second session in 2010 - Aug. 6, Sept. 3 and Oct. 1. Because Art Walk has become so popular, the hours have been extended from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

First Friday Art Walk is a free, self-guided tour to Marietta's eclectic art scene. Art galleries, museums and merchants host artists within their stores. Look for an official Art Walk banner in the window to identify the participating venues. Choose your own route or begin from the Art Walk headquarters tent in "Artists' Alley" - an exhibit of juried artists showing a wide variety of styles. The Alley will be in the Courtyard and Alley by the Marietta Welcome Center & Visitors Bureau at 4 Depot Street, behind Cool Beans.

THE COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT AGENCY held a ribbon cutting ceremony on June 21 for its new facility located at 1150 Powder Springs Street, Marietta, in the Powder Springs Station. The building was dedicated as the Henley Vansant wing, in honor of Henley Vansant Sr., a Cobb resident, World War II veteran and philanthropist known for his public service and contributions to our community.

Vansant served as chair of the Planning Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals for more than 20 years. During his chairmanship of the Planning Commission, projects such as the Cobb Galleria Centre, Town Center Mall, Merchant's Walk and the Mable House historic complex were developed.

IN ITS LAST MEETING, the Kennesaw City Council passed an ordinance prohibiting the sale of tobacco within the city limits to anyone under the age of 18 years.

The ordinance was an initiative of the Kennesaw Youth Council, an eight-member team of high school students who provide the mayor and council with a teen perspective on city matters, and it gained the support of the Cobb County Health Department.

The ordinance covers all kinds of tobacco products containing biologically active amounts of nicotine. It specifically states that retailers are responsible for determining the age of anyone attempting to purchase tobacco products. Vending machines dispensing tobacco will be prohibited in retail establishments unless the business limits admission to anyone age 18 and over.
