COBB COUNTY - Newly elected Cobb Chairman Tim Lee is expected to be sworn in following Tuesday afternoon's work session and preside over his first meeting at the helm of the Board of Commissioners that night, county spokeswoman AikWah Leow said.

Former Commissioner Lee beat challenger Larry Savage in the July 20 primary election, garnering 41,715 votes, or 61 percent of the ballots cast.

At Tuesday night's meeting:

- There will be a second public hearing regarding proposed code amendments defining pain clinics and zoning allowances for them. The first public hearing for Commissioner Bob Ott's proposed two-term limit to members of the Ethics Board will be conducted also.

- The county millage rate will be set and is proposed to stay at 6.82 mills for the General Fund, 2.56 mills for the Fire District and 0.22 mills for Debt Service, totaling to 9.6 mills. County finance director Jim Pehrson said this would be the fifth year the millage rate stays at 9.6 mills, and that the county has one of the lowest millage rates in the metro area.

According to the Cobb County Tax Commissioner's website, "The millage rate is a determining factor in the calculation of your taxes. A mill is 1/10 of 1 cent, or $1 per $1,000 of assessed value. The millage rate multiplied by the assessed value determines the amount of taxes you owe. All property taxes - for home, auto and personal property - are calculated in the same way."

- The board is expected to approve an increase in the county parking deck fee for visitors who do not work for Cobb government from $3 to $5. The increase will take effect on Aug. 1, and will also be enforced at the new $7.5 million parking deck that is being built in conjunction with the new $63 million Superior Courthouse off the Marietta Square. At the board's Tuesday afternoon work session, commissioners will get an update on the new Courthouse and parking deck.

- The county is also expected to approve a new sublease agreement with the Marietta Museum of History for the purpose of constructing and operating an aviation museum on 15.5 acres located on Atlanta Road. The county had previously entered into a 50-year agreement with the Marietta Aeronautical Museum and Education Center, Inc. for an aviation museum to be built on the property, but when the MAMEC was unable to match the $500,000 required by the county to receive $500,000 from the county, the museum was handed over to the Marietta Museum of History.

Some of the terms of the new sublease include: ends on September 22, 2055; MMH is required to pay "rent" in the form of protection and maintenance of the leased property for the duration of the sublease; provisions for termination of the sublease for failure to cure faults; that the MMH provide utilities and insurance; construction must begin by September 23, 2012 and completed by September 23, 2015.

- Route 40 of the Cobb Community Transit will also be changed from a stop at the intersection of Fairground Street and South Marietta Parkway to the intersection of Cherokee Street and North Marietta Parkway in Marietta.

enough with the canton road sidewalk campaign, canton road, the best thing that could happen to it would be for an auxilliary interstate be built on top of canton road and whipe out all of the sad excuses for businesses that are already there

If you recall, Moon was the only candidate who originally jumped in District 3 race to challenge Lee's track record. The others all played footsie with Lee. Too bad voters chose Ms. Lobbyist vs. Mr. Gun Charge instead of a qualified candidate. Maybe they will wake up and ask Moon to challenge Lee again in 2 years for Chair.

This past weekend sounds like buyers remorse on Tim Bob Lee form the MDJ. Even if people don’t read the paper they here about endorsements and voters are dumb. Most of these people that voted for Tim Bob still never looked at his campaign discloser; you can’t get that for Entertainment Tonight. So when the special interest bellies up to gut Cobb County they will all ask how this happened!!

HOA's ARE petty......which is why they are irrelevant.

If HOAs would ever learn to mind their own business, instead of everybody else's, then they might be seen as something other than petty.

It's disappointing to realize that voters don't pay any attention to what the candidates have done in the past, and/or what kind of resumes they have. What has Mr. Lee done for us? Or, what does the Cobb County Chambers of Commerce now demand?

David K has it right. Tim is now actually in the position of chief public servant, not monarch.

The ongoing recession may result in further cuts in services and furloughs. Neighborhoods and civic groups will be asked to pick up more of the slack for service provision.

There are a handful of powerful folks in Cobb who see HOAs and Neighborhood groups as petty and irrelevant. These groups and the people who participate are the foundation of our community. Their participation in neighborhood and civic organizations will be increasingly important as Cobb tries to maintain a good quality of life. Any member of the BOC who fails to understand this basic fact is himself, irrelevant.

We will need to continue to remind Mr. Lee that the Cobb County organizational chart is upside-down with we citizens as boss and Tim Lee as our employee. Unfortunately he's never understood this simple concept and his ego is out of control.

A sad day for Cobb! I'm sure Tim Lee now thinks he is equal to God with this win.

I'd rather pay a little higher millage rate & ensure my property doesn't go down the toilet, than continue to have the lowest , as it shows by the conditions in the county. Cobb County (government)disconnects itself from more than 1/2 of the county that is in poor, deplorable condition. There's trash all over the place, run-down neighborhoods, out of date road conditions & more & more empty strip shopping centers! There is NO excuse for Smyrna & up I-75 & all areas west to look like it does- w/ no hope of any new business or industry! Here we are @ one of the most accessable, viable corners in North West Atlanta sitting on 285/75 & it remains one of the POOREST working class & low (illegal alien) class cities! Cobb County, either get on the ball,... or watch North Fulton(future Milton County) & Gwinnett get all the new business! Cobb Parkway, Dobbins AFB, Lockhead, Smyrna, South Cobb Drive, Windy Hill Road, Austell, Six Flags, White Water, Powder Springs, Veterns Memorial Hwy., Belmont Elementary, Green Acres Elementary, Fair Oaks, Smyrna neighborhoods, Marietta neighborhoods, Austell Rd.,Fairground Street, Bells Ferry,etc.,etc.,.. the rundown conditions spread far & wide,... & I NEVER hear any solutions!!!There should have been action taken & a plan put in place & followed 20 years ago!!
