WEST COBB - In perhaps the closest race in the Cobb Republican Primary, small-business owner Lindsey Tippins faces incumbent John Wiles for the west Cobb, District 37 state Senate seat.

With no Democratic challengers, the race will likely be decided this month.

Politicos see Tippins, a well-known, three-time Cobb school board chairman and savvy businessman, as a serious threat to Wiles.

Tippins has the support of such heavyweights as former Cobb Sheriff Bill Hutson, who may still have the strongest political machine in the county with the annual, nonpartisan Cobb Sheriff's Corn Boilin' he started in 1989.

Sheriff Neil Warren also endorsed Tippins on Thursday.

"As a member of the Cobb County school board for 12 years, Lindsey was concerned with providing our children a safe and secure learning environment, and it was his vision and foresight that led to the implementation of the School Resource Officer Program."

But Wiles, of Kennesaw, also has a fan base. Wiles is endorsed by Georgia Right to Life and the National Rifle Association, as well as U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-Moultrie).

"I am backing John not just because he is a leader for conservatives at the state Capitol, but because he is my friend," Chambliss said. "John has led the fight to keep state spending under control and to balance the budget in these tough economic times without resorting to massive tax increases."

Not all of Wiles' publicity has been flattering, though. Robert D. Ingram, former president of the State Bar, recently wrote to members of the bar's Board of Governors, asking them to help defeat Wiles. Ingram wrote that Wiles "has made the State Bar of Georgia and the judiciary his No. 1 enemy," in part by pushing legislation that would make membership voluntary for lawyers, according to the Fulton Daily Report. Wiles disputed the allegations.

He also drew criticism for comments reportedly made when police were citing teens for drinking alcohol at a Christmas party at a Marietta Country Club home. He is quoted in the police report as asking an officer not to give one of the teens a citation because it could jeopardize his baseball scholarship. Wiles was called to the scene of the December party to pick up his son and has said the police report is incorrect.

Wiles said voters should return him to office because he is "a consistent conservative with a proven record of reducing spending, reducing taxes and attacking the tough issues such as immigration and tort reform. My experience and leadership position as the Republican Whip of the Senate means that I can get done what I promise to do for the constituents of the district."

Tippins is running on his record of service on the Cobb school board and as a "bona fide businessman."

"I understand economic responsibility, and I understand economic accountability," Tippins said.

While both Tippins and Wiles are fiscal and social conservatives, Tippins said there's a great deal of difference between running a small business and practicing law.

"The incumbent is bragging that he cut $4 billion out of the state budget in the past two years. What he's not telling you is he was there when it was added three years prior to that. You always have to watch expenditures and continuation costs in business," Tippins said.

Both Wiles and Tippins oppose extending MARTA rail lines into Cobb.

Tippins sees no problem with banning all lobbyist gifts and has pledged to donate his Senate salary to scholarships for children, as he did while serving on the school board.

Wiles spoke of the big step the Legislature took this session on ethics reform.

"We passed an omnibus ethics reform legislation that establishes the Georgia Government Transparency and Campaign Finance Commission and provides for more stringent reporting requirements on all officials and lobbyists, in addition to new provisions that limit the abuse of official power, conflicts of interest, improper conduct and sexual harassment," he said.

I'll honestly vote for anyone who supports shipping out all of the illegals (Mexicans, Jamaicans, Kenyans, etc) who have decided West Cobb is a place they want to be for whatever reason, and who will ban home owners from renting their homes to Section 8 tenants. "All of the above" have contributed to a steady decline in the quality of life here, and it needs to stop before we become the next Stone Mountain.

Let's take a deep breath before the tingle runs up our leg for Tippins. Is Wiles perfect? NO! However, Tippins isn't either. Let's take a brief trip down memory lane.

TIPPINS?

1. THE MAN who once as a board member and once as the chairman of the Cobb County School District oversaw at least two four year “No Bid” Brock Clay contracts.

3. THE MAN who voted for the SPLOST 2 “No Bid” Project Manager contract with the now convicted felon(s) & owner of The Facility Group. Could it be because his company subcontracted with the Facility Group???????

4. THE MAN who was overheard and reported in the MDJ (9-21-08), “denouncing Gregory for writing a recent letter to the editor chastising 2 prominent Cobb businessmen for supporting SPLOST without revealing their connections with the school district. Tippins was overheard advising Crooks to send Gregory a letter from the full school board stating her service was no longer needed on the F&T Committee, effective by the end of this year.” A man who has proven yet again he will defend and protect his good ol’ boy network at any cost. The cost here is Truth.

5. THE MAN who has defended Dr. John Crooks. Could it be because he agrees with Crooks??????????

6. THE MAN who in 2008 threw his hat in the ring for a 4th term as Post 1’s Board Representative & who for months never said a word then suddenly on the first day of qualifying for the race announced he was not going to run handing Post 1 over to Lynnda Crowder-Eagle with no opponent. Could it be because he was attempting to rig the election???????

7. THE MAN who was on the board when CCSD tried to take by imminent domain the west Cobb farm from an elderly couple and it was JOHN WILES that stepped in and prevented it from happening. Where was Tippins, the man of the people??????

Tippins didn’t stop it!

Let's think for a moment before we vote for change again.

Can we ever get a little fairness in the articles written in this paper? Why does there always have to be an editorial slant to EVERYTHING? Even in this simple article. Very tiresome. Yes, we know who you want to win the election. Can you at least give your readers a shot at evaluating who WE want without being clouded by the writer's opinions? Good grief. I dare you to post this. If not, I assume that you are afraid of readers being able to form an opinion on their own.

Although I don't know Lindsey Tippens personally, I closely followed his voting policy while he was sitting on the Cobb County Board of Education. He and Betty Gray questioned the Cobb County BOE and Redden during the lap top fisacco era. And, I know for a fact that he gave each Teacher of the Year in his district a $1000 at Christmas as a way of saying "thank you." We need someone in office to stand up for education and make decent, ethical decisions for Georgia. My vote is for Lindsey Tippens.

We need more real people like Lindsey Tippens and less Lawyers and people who support John Wiles.

That being Newt Ginghery and Saxby Chambliss.

Newt was doing the same thing; when we was trying to impeach Bill Clinton.

Many blessing; Vote for Lindsey Tippens.

As a person involved in the community I find my self face to face with Senator Wiles quite often. It must be an election year because he finally has time to say Hi and try to shake my hand. NO THANKS. To late John Boy you need to remember who got you here not only when you need our vote.

Enough of John Wiles! He has played too many political games at the capitol to obtain his position at the expense of the citizens of Cobb County! His refusal to deal with the illegals issue while telling us he is leading the fight is only the latest example of his games! Lindsey is fair and balanced in his thinking and has done an outstanding job in public office in the past, please vote for him!

John Wiles on TV Tuesday night was a joke. He looked and sounded like a fish out of water. He tried so hard to use the word we, when we know his favorite word is I. Your coach needs to work harder. His sole purpose of wanting to be in the senate is also the "I FACTOR". We need new blood. Mr Tippins is the man. A proven honest leader and business man. That would sure be a different experience for us in West Cobb.
GA needs ethics

The ethics bill Wiles refers to is a joke. It was so watered down, it's not surprising that Wiles embraced it.

John Wiles is an arrogant lawyer who cares nothing for the general public. All of his children have gone to private school so he truly cares nothing about education in Cobb. Vote Lindsey Tippens!

Tippins is a good man with a solid background along with a common sense business approach to opertating a business. He is my favorite to win the election. We need more men or women like him with his character to lead.
