COBB - Cobb Police arrested and charged a man on Wednesday in connection with a June 19 head-on collision that severely injured a Cobb Police sergeant on I-575.

Christopher Scott Richards, 33, of Canton and Lakeland, Fla., was released from Atlanta Medical Center on Wednesday, arrested and charged with reckless driving, driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, fleeing and attempting to elude, serious injury by vehicle, possession of marijuana and four counts of violation of the Georgia Controlled Substances Act.

On June 19, Richards was allegedly fleeing authorities at a high rate of speed on I-575 southbound when he crossed the grass median at Barrett Parkway, continued south in the northbound lanes and smashed into Sgt. M.J. Crider's patrol car.

Police said Richards first eluded authorities in Cherokee County, who were trying to stop him on suspicion of impaired driving. He fled south on I-575 into Cobb County, in a silver Honda Civic, where police attempted to stop him again at the Chastain Road exit. Richards then crossed the median around 10:50 a.m. and hit Crider, who was traveling northbound in the left-hand lane, police said.

Following the crash, Richards was taken to Atlanta Medical, while Crider, who was supervising the pursuit, was transported via helicopter to Grady Memorial Hospital.

After being released from Atlanta Medical, Richards was transported to Cobb County Adult Detention Center on Wednesday, police said. Charges against him are also pending in Cherokee County.

Crider was released from Grady and arrived home on last Friday afternoon, Cobb Police spokesman Officer Joe Hernandez said Wednesday.
