The Colotl Debacle: System is 'messed up' - and it's our fault

"I think it's really sad. ... I never thought that I was going to be caught up in this messed-up system, so I'm just hoping for the best and waiting for something positive such as the Dream Act to be passed sometime in the future."

- KSU student Jessica Colotl at her press conference on Friday

"MESSED-UP SYSTEM"? MS. COLOTL IS RIGHT. This is a messed-up system we have here in these United States. Just consider:

This is a system in which we have fairly rigorous laws aimed at preventing illegals from entering the country. But those laws are ignored as often as they are enforced. They are scrupulously upheld against those trying to emigrate here from Europe, Canada and most of Asia and Africa, but are only thinly upheld against those who come from south of the border. In fact, if you can make it across the border without getting caught, you can pretty much consider yourself "home free."

Take the case of Ms. Colotl, for example. Her parents brought her here as a young girl from Mexico, and lived more or less openly afterward. She received a free education - a good one; so good, in fact, that she graduated with honors and, to her credit, was admitted to Kennesaw State University. Many would say that a system that turns a blind eye to those who enter illegally, yet educates them and admits them, no questions asked, to one of the state's best colleges, and at a reduced, in-state tuition fee, is "messed up."

It is messed up, indeed, and that is not the fault of Ms. Colotl or even of those who are using her as a pawn to make the case for softening our immigration laws even further, to the consistency of room-temperature Jell-O. No, the fault for our "messed up system" rests firmly on our own shoulders. Too many Americans for too long were too busy to pay attention to what has been happening along our Southern border, and the ramifications of that flood.

A disproportionate share of the blame also must accrue to our politicians in Washington who for years looked the other way as illegals poured in, and who now are trying to cozy up to the illegals and their supporters in hopes of winning the support of that ever-growing bloc of voters.

And the other big share of the blame is on the shoulders of businessmen, especially factory owners, farmers and builders, who have come to rely on the cheap labor of the illegals, and who as a result, have virtually run native-born Americans out of certain businesses and trades. And it is the taxpayer who is left to clean up most of the mess, paying school, health and other costs for the illegals and their families.

SO NOW WE HAVE MS. COLOTL, a Mexican citizen raised in metro Atlanta whose status as an illegal alien came to light after she was stopped for a traffic violation on the KSU campus in March and who is fast becoming a cause celebre in liberal circles as a "victim" of unscrupulous racists and bigots in the immigration wars, who hate anyone and everyone with brown skin. But as usual, the liberals have it wrong. Those who have been so loudly critical of Ms. Colotl, and of KSU's handling of the affair, and of the Board of Regents' "Who cares?" approach to the citizenship status of its students, could care less about Ms. Colotl's color. It's her right, or lack thereof, to be in the country that matters. Ms. Colotl has shown an admirable desire to improve herself and has excelled in the classroom. Her appetite for education is one we wish more Georgia citizens would aspire to.

But her sense of entitlement - her feeling that she is owed the opportunity to go to college here and deserves to be granted U.S. citizenship - undercuts the feelings of sympathy that her strivings might otherwise engender. Episodes like this make it less likely, not more, that political compromise on a "path to citizenship" for illegals will ever be paved.

Unfortunately, Ms. Colotl's supporters, knowing the law is not on their side, have few weapons other than their penchant for making unwarranted personal attacks. Exhibit A is their pathetic attempt to portray Cobb Sheriff Neil Warren as unscrupulous, calling him "Wild West Warren." They claim Colotl is a victim of racial profiling, which Warren has forcefully rebutted. It was not his fault that Ms. Colotl was driving in such a way as to attract the attention of KSU campus police. And it was not his fault that she gave false information to police. If anything, Warren deserves the thanks and support of Cobb residents in his stalwart efforts to uphold our laws.

SO YES, MS. COLOTL is correct. We have a messed-up system, just not in the way she envisions it. The "Colotl debacle" offers abundant evidence of that - and we don't advise anyone to hold their breath while waiting for Washington to fix it.

Two things:

1) You never explained why our immigration lwas are immoral. Please do so.

2) Please cite your sources as to 'every comprehensive study' demonstrating that allowing illegal immigration equates to a net gain for the host country; I don't believe you. Please back up your rather lofty claims with some facts.

Keep in mind drop, if you cannot address these two issues in a satisfactory manner what little credibility you have will diminish.

Colotl is simply the tip of the iceberg, but the manner in which this whole affair has been handled shows why Georgia, and our nation, are sinking faster than the Titanic. At present, Georgia has more illegals residing here than does Arizona! Statistics show that the majority of the Hispanic gangmembers, which have grown in huge numbers over the past ten years, are here illegally. The President of Mexico chastises our handling of illegals for two reasons: Money being sent from the US to Mexico by illegals is Mexico's greatest source of outside revenue, and he does not want the illegals returned because so many of them are criminals (just as Castro allowed so many criminals to leave Cuba and become our problem). Our government, particularly the current Democratic Politburo, has repeatedly shown that they can mess up a one-car funeral, and until we get rid of the liberal-minded, politically-correct individuals currently residing in Washington, and replace them with individuals who truly care about the welfare of this country, people who will call for enforcement of our laws, we are going to be faced with the scofflaws continuing to enter our country, and putting a huge drain on our welfare system. Allowing Colotl to break our laws without penalty is an engraved invitation to other illegals to try for that same pot of gold. They have nothing to lose, and everything to gain. That's like gambling at Vegas with someone else's money. If you win, you keep all the winnings; if you lose, you get a free ride home. Under those circumstances, I'd be heading to Vegas, too!

Why is it ok to allow illegals to attend our public schools?

Every comprehensive economic study done has shown that illegal immigrants are a net economic gain for the country. Illegal immigration is not a criminal act, it is a civil violation. Jessica Colotl thinks like an American, she has lived here since she was a child.

Yes Drop-deport ANYONE who is in the U.S. ILLEGALLY. ANYONE. It does not matter if they married a U.S. citizen or if they had a half dozen babies. And while we are at it, do away with the anchor baby law. As soon as a female comes across the U.S. border ILLEGALLY, they start producing babies, thus creating more medicaid/welfare cases and causing our schools to become crowded. Then we have to hire teachers just to teach them English. Or it is like in my child's school-their teacher told them to help the child learn English. So now we are employing unpaid child labor in our county schools. Absolutely unbelievable!

This system is messed up for illegal aliens

not for those who wait their turn in line to enter

the U.S. with legal permission.

Jessica Colotl thinks just like a Mexican!

She is a victim? No Jessica you are the child

of criminals that sneak around like rats and feel

perfectly comfortable breaking laws.

NO SYMPATHY FOR YOU!

By the by, drop, please share with everyone why you think a law that requires persons visiting the US or attempting to take up residence in the US to notify US of their presence and thie intentions is morally reprehensible? Tell everyone why a law the lets the US regulate it's borders is morally corrupt. Many countries of the world regulate not only their borders but the flow of bodies into and out of their borders. Are you against the laws for all of these countries or just the US? Do you rally against Mexico for having much more stringent laws in regards to their borders, particularly their southern border.

I do not think it is morally wrong to deport someone who has chosen to come to or stay in this country illegally. If someone chooses to marry an illegal alien then it is my assumption that they choose to do so understanding what the consequences may be.

Further, I would not deport anyone 'gleefully' as you wrongly assume but I would have anyone breaking the law answer for their actions as the law prescribes.

In the future, drop, instead of trying to paint law-abiding citizens as sadistic louts, why don't you try to stay on task and realize that it is the law breakers that are issue here, not those of us that wish to see the law adhered to. If you think the law is unjust, try to fix it. Casting dispersions against those of us just asking for laws to be be enforced really demeans you and makes you look small-minded.

In addition to federal immigration law, Georgia also has the SAVE Act which prohibits illegal aliens from attending college in the State EVEN IF THEY PAY FULL TUITION FOR IT. As long as we're pointing figures, we might as well point them at officials charged with enforcing the law (such as the University's President and Board of Regents) but who refuse to do so. That's what we've had for 24 years--requirements to enforce the law and failure to do so. Which is why the State of Arizona's new law allows citizens to sue officials who refuse to do their duty.

So you think it is morally right to deport someone who has lived here since childhood. I suppose you would also gleefully deport an illegal, even if they had an American spouse and children born here.

What's even more messed up is that this pathetic little thing didn't at all care that the system was messed up in her favour until recently when she decided to thumb her nose at it whilst under the microscope. She needs to go away.
Bad habits

May 18, 2010
This is exactly what happens when illegals cancerously permeate the environment - bad habits prevail - illegal actions slowly turn into an acceptable norm of behaviour, and it's one lie today, another lie tomorrow, it keeps going on, snowballing until the whole system and the host country is as absolutely corrupt and without enforcement, like the country of origin. Scientifically speaking, it is the parasite killing the host.

Put someone effective in charge of 'The System' and it will work.

The perception will be as good as the message if Warren is in charge.

Just need people with strong work ethics to make it work!
ENFORCE IT
|
May 18, 2010
The system is NOT messed-up, it's just not followed through in it's last step.

The system's last step - ENFORCEMENT - is not being followed through...except for Neil Warren, he's the only one who makes it work and it's not at fault - so the system works.

So, ENFORCE it - make'em follow the system legally and it will work - start it all over again by sending'em back.

It is much harder to play on a child's recreation sports team than it is to be admitted to KSU, receive welfare, healthcare or employemnt. I know that as far back as the 1980s, children who played baseball, football & soccer on a private league in elementary school, had to submit a CERTIFIED birth certificate with the seal to prove their age or they did NOT play. You also had to give a copy of their health insurance card to prove health insurance and sign a consent to treat. These same practices are in place with most sports leagues in this county now. Yet, it is easy as pie to enter the U.S., attend school, attend college, obtain in state tuition, welfare, healthcare, or employment for an ILLEGAL person. Ignoring the law by the federal, state, & local gov'ts and employers is totally unacceptable & absurd! Lock up the politicians and the ILLEGALS. Let the law abiding U.S. citizens run this country and it will NOT be in this mess, headed to ruin & collapse.

Well, WAW, the problem is een if there are no jobs, the word is out that if they come to the USA they will receive free food, housing, eduction, medical, housing allowances (wihout any enforcement of how many can live in a house), stipends, citizenship for children born here to illegals, and on and on. It may be the availability of work that attracts some, but I am sure there are an equal number, or more, who know if they can only get across that border, these parents are well aware that they "b etter life" they can give there children are at teh expense of the taxpaying US citizens. So I am assuming that you are also in favor of removing ALL public welfare if citizenship cannot be proven. This means it would have to be provided to schools when ernrolling any of their half dozen or more children, to the welfare when seeking food stamps, housing, etc. So while employers shoulder some of the blame, our government, at all levels is just as culpable for the freebies they offer with no strings attached.

Here is a modest solution that should please everyone: For the liberals, Jessica Colotl will be allowed to finish her degree, perhaps paying out-of-state tuition. For the conservatives, on the morning after her graduation, she'll be taken to the steps of the Gold Dome downtown and crucified.

Our outrage goes way beyond her ungrateful comments or the attack of her supporters on our law enforcement. We are outraged because the cost of illegal immigration has put our state in the red and we cannot get out without removing all public benefits. Jessica needs to go to Mexico and demand they fix the country's problems, and we will continue to do the same here.
