But perhaps the more obvious changes have been new housing construction, such as the foreclosed Manget development, and more ethnically diverse residents, particularly Hispanics.
"Our neighborhood is in continual change," Lewis said.
On Saturday, the Loop Group, a Marietta neighborhood association that attempts to reach across ethnic, cultural and economic divides, conducted its 12th annual Loop Group Neighborhood Block Party on Lakewood Drive between Frasier Street and Alexander Circle.
The goal of the party was to bring neighbors closer together, given the community's demographic changes over the years.
An estimated 200 people were expected throughout the warm afternoon. A live band called Metro Quest banged out tunes from the front porch of a house; while a diverse group of residents talked over plates piled high with an assortment of homemade foods, from hamburgers and hotdogs, to tamales and fajitas. Their children played together under the watch of city police, fire and other personnel who visited.
"This is surprising that people still do this stuff. So many people kind of keep their boundaries," said Antoinette Ortega, 41, who moved in December to Grogan Street with her family. "But this is wonderful."
The Loop Group also sponsors an annual Christmas parade, during which gift bags and candy are delivered to children. Former Ward 1 city councilwoman Betty Hunter founded the organization about 17 years ago. She said the block party was started to bridge cultural differences and has had success.
"We needed something to bind the whole neighborhood together, where we could appreciate each other more," Hunter said while serving tamales, a favorite with many of the partygoers, from a pot.
More and more Hispanics are starting to move out of the neighborhood, according to Lewis. But it continues to be a mix of ethnicities, ages and professions.
"We're very eclectic. We're very diverse," she said. "You have houses that were built in the early 1900s to those that were built in 2009."
Cheryl Richardson, 49, has lived on Grogan Street for three years. Asked if such gatherings were bringing neighbors closer, she responded: "I hope so."

I suspect with all the public servants who stopped by to have a burger the illegals probably did not flock to the block party.
Diversity is not a code word for illegal. Diversity in our neighborhood means black, white, Asian and Hispanic of varying economic backgrounds AND of varying age groups coming to live in what we consider to be one of the best neighborhoods in Marietta!
Your argument about "No one can claim a land that was stolen to being with..." is a bunch of ridiculous bunk. Following your logic, then even us Native American Indians can not claim this land since we stole it from the Cave Bears and the Dinosaurs.
Do everyone that is a Native American a favor, sit down, shut up, drink your juice box and let the grown-ups talk.
The Loop Group Rocks!!!
Don't get it twisted, foreclosure is the result of nonpayment of your mortgage, not because of a particlar race...nonexisistent jobs are because companies downsized and realized that they could work the dog doo out of folks by combining jobs at the same pay and they wouldn't say a word buy titling it "reorganization"...Education sucks because our political leaders have their priorities screwed up and would rather line their pockets, then worry about the future decision makers, in addition the teachers just don't care, its a paycheck...and hospitals are crap because the cost to go is so expensive that most opt out of going, or limit the amount of testing because of the cost and what insurance will and won't cover...do I need to go on or stop right there?
So please do us all a favor while your standing on your soapbox blaming, ask yourself, what are you doing besides whining to add a positive change to the current state of society? Because if you haven't done anything to add and enhance, then YOU are the drain your complaining about...enough said
In the square that is from Austell Rd, Pat Mell Rd and S. Cobb Dr, you can watch a school bus let out that is at least 90% Latino. The tax payers are paying for the bus ride, the free lunch (and is some cases breakfast), the section 8 on their house payment, the medicaid that they're on and the food stamps that they use. This has no doubt helped to lead to the job losses experienced by our teachers.
As far as my stance on illegal aliens, I don't mind for anyone that wants to live in America to live hear. They should just do it in the legal manner. Is it difficult? Yep. Does it take a while? Yep. Is our National security important enough to have those safeguards in place? Of course it is! Should all of the productive, hard-working Americans have to pay for their every need? HECK NO!
Immigration reform is needed. It needs to start with completely sealing off our Southern border. Kind of pointless trying to clean up the water if you haven't patched the hole in the plumbing. The next step is to aggressively deporting all illegal aliens WHENEVER they are discovered. Send the children back with their families. There is no sense in breaking up familia.
Nobody has a problem having their documents checked at the airport to get on a plane. Why the heck is it so darn difficult to do the same in every other situation? These people are here ILLEGALLY. To every other law abiding citizen, they are CRIMINALS.
If you are Latino and are here legally and are offended by this, you shouldn't be. You should be offended that these people are giving you a bad name. Kudos to you folks for doing things the right way. Thank you for taking personal responsibility and paying your own way. There's no reason why you should be helping these people take the easy way out.
Just one man's opinion...
Face it, American was founded as a "melting pot"; it's the reason the Statue of Liberty stands in NY Harbor.
GREAT!!! I can not wait till this November! I am a life long Marietta Resident and I am Sick of it!
Time for a CHANGE (back to the old America) to uphold the Constitution and Bill of Rights!
You're a disgrace to humanity.
