KSU’s preferential treatment of illegal immigrant student is disgusting

After learning the other day that KSU went to bat for the student being deported after it was discovered she was not only in this country illegally, but had been a student at KSU for three years, I’m regretting my initial sympathy for the girl. I’m also angry at the university leadership, pandering when they should be leading on an important issue.

Most citizens really don’t care how much "potential" the young lady has; the actions of the university show Dan Papp and crew are giving special treatment to her, based on ethnic heritage, or her race or possibly even her GPA — it doesn’t really matter which. The point is, they’ve bent over back-wards to bring her back when I doubt they’d be doing the same if she didn’t have the backing of various Latino activist groups.

D.A. King, a local expert on immigration policy and the consequences of illegal immi-gration, told me, "According to all the re-ports I’ve read, there are numerous viola-tions of both federal and state laws in this case, both of which are designed to protect our shrinking public benefits in Georgia."

And it’s true. The student, Jessica Colotl, may have been granted a deferral by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (an act of discretion, it was explained) but she remains an illegal alien and many laws have been broken.

While it was initially reported Colotl claimed to pay out-of-state tuition, it was later reported KSU had granted her in-state status. How many students and their parents, legal citizens of nearby states paying five times the amount in tuition, are feeling the sting of that one?

Certainly Dr. Papp can’t wait for this to blow over, but I hope it doesn’t. Wouldn’t it be interesting to know if Jessica, who en-joyed membership in the Latina sorority on campus, also enjoyed the benefit of federal Pell grants, Georgia’s HOPE scholarship or one of the coveted federal work-study jobs on campus? Our tax dollars already paid for university lawyers to intervene on her behalf, so it wouldn’t surprise me if we were paying her tuition too.

Might local law enforcement shed light on how her gold Honda was insured or how it passed emissions and was registered with-out a valid driver’s license or address? Speaking as a mom required to jump through multiple hoops making all that happen for my college daughters’ two out-of-state vehicles, I’m especially interested in how that all worked.

It’s been reported Jessica wants to attend law school. Will her deferral extend for years, and which law school will admit her? Who will pay for that, La Raza? GALEO? Coca-Cola? Me? I cannot wait to find out.

Does anyone out there know Jessica’s real address, anyone? Or how the university doesn’t seem to care that she doesn’t have one, or how she had a Mexican driver’s license if she came to this country at age 7 or age 10 (depending on which version of the truth you’ve read)?

How does all this work, Dr. Papp? And can you really say you are serving the citi-zens of Georgia when it’s a fact that deserving Georgians are being turned away from attending KSU while illegal, undocumented, ineligible-by-law people are being admitted and then given special treat-ment along the way?

I’m sure if we followed the money, we’d have our answers. But right now I’m just too disgusted.

I Totally agree, Laura (Armstrong).

Also, why couldn't Jessica just go to school in Mexico? Period.

Afterall her family is still there.

@ Esdraelon

I'm just saying we have to stop with the double standards. You mentioned you don't use illegals, lawbreakers, or liars, and that's very noble. Clearly the post was not for you...

My in-laws for example, Georgia residents, love to proclaim they are 100% against illegal immigration, yet they eat at the local taqueria about 3-4 times a week and always have something nice to say about "all of the hard working kids (illegals) that work there".... Makes no sense!

Like I said, either we're going to embrace them, or stop with the madness altogether. We can't continue to have people opposing immigrants one day, wanting to deport all of them immediately, but when it's time to clean the crap out of the backyard, they swing by home depot to score a couple of cheap day workers. Those morons are my target, they need to make up their mind. You however, seem to have your act together.

Dear Latinophobia: I have never run away from anything or anyone in my life so far and I do not intend to do so before I die. While those German dictators you talk abour were trying to take over the world and just about succeeded, I and two of my brothers risked our fortunes, our bodies and our lives, along with 6 million other Americans, to keep them from doing so. That was the last war that America won. Since then, America's politicians have been content to play for a tie, while letting others die in their place. I am not apposed to Latinos, or any other race, creed or color, so long as they are in America legally, work at a job, pay their taxes, accept responsibility for their actions, pull their share of the load and respect America. If they don't demonstrate all of those qualities, they are not welcome here, as far as I am concerned and can go back to wherever they came from. My privately held company hired Latinos if they were in fact Americans or in the process of becoming Americans. If they are were not, they were just another gang of hoodlums trying to take what belongs to others and I will fight them just as I and my family, of German decent, fought Hitler and his gang of hoodlums to the death or total surrender. As for reconstruction, I also personally served to carry eight shiploads of goods which my country, America, gave to the Germans and all Europeans, to help them stay alive and rebuild their countries after WWII. While I am of German decent, I am not a German. I am an an American and don't you dare to attempt to infer otherwise. I accept everyone else who is an American or comes to my country legally and indicates, by his or her actions the he or she wants to become one. Anyone who wants to come to my country to yell and jump around in our streets waving the flag of any other nation, while burning the flag of America, will find me as the enemy, and that includes you, whoever you are.

Dear James Stoll,

Now that you mentioned, I find it ironic that you are preaching about Invasion being that you are German By decent. of Course, I could not expect anything less form Some one who Ran Away during Those times of reconstruction. I am very thankful you have defended this country, but so have I and up to Today There is no recognition to Latinos in the Armed forces. so if you have paid attention, notice that Latinos are also an integral part of the United States Economy. also Read what "esdraelon" wrote: no one has had a problem until now that we hold positions of power and seem to represent a Threat to national security,(or so you claim) by the Way, We where here first thousands of years ago, how ignorant do you have to be to know that latinos helped build this country in the 40s, when your dear dictators in your home country were trying to take over the world you are the real invader who hides behind your cheap arguments of Xenophobia. Accepted you feel Intimidated by Latinos.

Respectfully

leftwingyahoo: As usual, snide presumption from one of the 39% who actually believe Obama walks on water.

You know, it's quite enlightening to see your type of response in print. It gives us rednecks a revealing lesson on what self-proclaimed 'real Americans' believe.

Like '-phobe', '-phobia', etc, 'hate' is a word casually tossed about by that 39% to exemplify their self-proclaimed moral superiority over us lowly rednecks and others who do not care for the politics of the mindless.

Huh? You talking to me? Are you trying to suggest that only by using the labor of illegals can one attain a competitive marketplace? I don't use illegals, lawbreakers, or liars such as your Ms Colotl, attending Kennesaw State University, so why should I embrace them? Again base presumption from yourself.

Your entire response was filed with invective, however, you failed to give one single reason why

your position statement here carries any logic of note.

But that's the left. Popular sentiment sees through clueless 'idea's' so they compensate by shrill, moralistic breast-beating in the hopes that us uneducated rednecks will be awed.

At least you hit on an apt username...you said it I didn't.

For those of you that think I would be ok with her staying in this country if she were from, say the UK, yes I would.

What country the person comes from is irrelevant. Breaking the law is breaking the law. Most universities only accept a certain amount of students per year. What about the student that didn't get in because they gave her spot to an illegal?

People need to stop saying it is a victimless crime, it is not. The university is dead wrong to be giving a space to an affordable school to someone who is not in the country illegally. When I went to college I had to give a social security number. They knew she was an illegal and they disregarded it.

She knew she shouldn't be driving and did it anyway. What if she had gotten into a bad accident with someone who couldn't afford to get to pay for the damages? If you were hit by someone who in the country illegally and had to pay for the damages done to your car yourself you may be singing another tune.

Illegal immigration is not a victimless crime.

I have great concern about several of these comments. I to consider myself to be a patriot - law abiding - tax paying. Yet - I firmly believe in the "American Way of Life" - which allows people the opportunity of bettering themselves.

If individuals knew the law - they would know that federal and/or state law prohibits a non-citizen from receiving financial aid. She could not have - nor did she receive HOPE or Pell. That is absurd!

As for taxes - yes, undocumented individuals have SSNs and do pay taxes.

Please be civil. She made a mistake. She should suffer the consequences - yet allow her the opportunity to become a citizen of this great country.

She could have gone her whole life in Georgia without a legal problem, as long as she stayed focused on the "acceptable" course, which is cleaning YOUR house, taking YOUR order from the Mickey D's drive thru, or bringing YOU and YOUR family another basket of chips and salsa...

I guess all you ignorant rednecks are just affraid in a few years she will be the one coming in to that fancy restaurant to eat a good meal, while your GED-graduate kid stands there asking what the Mrs. would like to drink...

Hate illegals but love your $25/week lawn care. Hate illegals but love to say "Gracias" to the little kid bringing your $3.99 Speedy Gonzalez lunch. Hate illegals but love that new pavement on your street, so smooth. Hate illegals but... the list goes on and on.

Either embrace 100% the people who provide you these basic services, or STOP using them period!! (but please call me when you're having to cut your own grass because that new all-american crew has become a little too pricy for your pocket.)

We are upset because she lied to the authorities. She an illegal and does not have the same rights as US citizens. I know she was brought over at the age of 10 but she is now an adult and able to make decisions for herself.Did her parents tell her to lie, drive without a licenses, and scream the race card. This has nothing to do with race but with Illegal immigration. Illegal means against the law. I don't if people no the difference between Legal and Illegal or if you took a government class. I would feel the same about a European who came here illegally. We have laws and the laws should be obeyed. If this to happen in another country we would rot in jail or disappear depending on the country. What makes her so special? I am just curious. It is not right to give her special treatment when she committed a felony by giving false information to the cops.

Dear Latinophobia,

Don't preach to me about immigrants. I am the son of immigrants from Germany. They came here legally and helped build this country to what ie was befor the Latinos invaded it. I also risked my life for 4 years in war to protect and defend it. What have you done. I also know the law. It is the responsibility of the individual to pay taxes on his income from labor. When I go to the grocery, I watch the latinos wiring money from their wages back to their home, so that more can invade us. Invading foreign nationals have done nothing of consequence for this countre except increase its addiction to drugs and violence. That we don't need.

dear concerned american, no it would not matter to me. illegal is illegal. if someone was sitting in your back yard without your permission, would it matter to you where they were from? of course not. however, if you invited them onto your property, that's a whole different scenario. i am concerned about the drain this is putting on our communities and the amounts of money that illegal aliens are costing tax paying citizens. if you don't think it's expensive for us, sit in the court systems. i work there every week. it's costing you and every other citizens many thousands a week. go to your local health department. it's costing you thousands of dollars a week and it's causing some of our own citizens to either not receive resources or have to wait months to get the resources they deserve as legal citizens of this country. people in our communities really need to educate themselves about what is actually going on day to day and how much this problem is a drain on all of our government resources. just wait. if it is not addressed now swiftly and directly, not only will we pay, but our children and grandchildren will. laugh if you want, but the proof is there. it is not racism. it is following the law. this young lady thinks it's a messed up system. she's right. she's proof of it!

Ms. Armstrong (and everyone else so upset about Ms. Coloti's status at KSU),

I have a question for you all. In all honesty and looking inside your hearts and being truly introspective, if the student in question was from the United Kingdom and had fair skin and had parents who had brought her illegally 15 years ago, would you be nearly as upset and disgusted? Would it be OK for an illegal Brit to be attempting this? Be honest with yourselves and the rest of us in answering this, please.

Dear James Stoll,

when you State that Jessica has milked the country and the society please remember that It was the US that took half of what today constitutes the united states from our neighboring Mexico. So as far as a crime goes she can be exempted unless you want to accept the invasion as a crime. What you see from Dr Papp is not preferential treatment but an act of equality and justice for all, just like is stated in our pledge. Mr Stoll, it is not an attack of occupation its just Emigration, and you suffer from Xenophobia. like I stated on my First posting "Its only a matter of time, your oppression and discrimination is motivation to our personal success." Hispanics (not just Mexicans)and all others who came to this country looking for Opportunities will Strive harder and would not give up for it is our right as humans to reach for excellence and again please read the Code of Law of the US, it protects Emigrants legal and nonlegal.

I beg to differ when the "illegals" are lined up pregnant at the local DFACS getting Medicaid debit cards and free health care at the health department and they say that they pay taxes. They stand there waiting with the whole family in tow, including the male member of the family. Yes, maybe a sales tax is what they think. They are smart enough they know the more kids they have, back to back, the more they take on the "America has been good to me attitude." We have also been at the bank on Friday, and you will see a whole load of Latinos cashing their paychecks and they get the full amount, minus taxes being deducted. I know, because I worked for the same company doing this and they are exempting their payroll taxes. The banking system has pandered to them to get their company banking business. The banks should have their feet held to the fire when no taxes are being deducted from someone that is in there every week with a paycheck and it is from a strapping young man. But that would be protecting them for racial profile You don't see the females because they are pushing strollers and have a bun in the oven driving a new SUV. Ms. Coloti can wipe that smug look off her face. Since she got that one minute of fame, she can't remember the first lie she has told and now will try to play the race card.

Oh and to Original TurtleIsle, I'm white and oh, by the way my ancestors came over in the early 1800s so no they didn't enslave any Native Americans. Oh, and guess what else...they settled in the north and they fought to free enslaved African Americans! How white supremacist is that for a history? Your liberal white supremacy argument is so tired.

KSU Alum 07, your liberal talk is a joke. Here's the main problem with illegal immigration as far as economics and taxes go: legal citizens pay taxes and benefit in some ways from them as well, illegal citizens DO NOT pay taxes, yet they still benefit from them. Basic math skills are all that is required to understand that that equals a deficit.

When people mention this is land of immigrants, the explanation is invalid as every country in this world was made of immigrants. In the past every body moved from one place to other easily when there were no laws. Now in the present day every sovereign country of this world have their own immigration law.Actually this country is extremely soft when it comes to illegal, if it was other country they would deport immediately. Try to live in present law not the past.

She is getting preferential treatment because she is hispanic. If it was international student violating rules, ie working outside without the permit, attending less than 12 credits a semester, and not maintaining good GPA, the same University will inform the INS and revoke the student Visa. Why is their a double standards? If you don't want apply rules to the undocumented person, you shouldn't apply rules to the people who come here to study with proper paper work either.
