COBB COUNTY - The Cobb County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday is expected to officially declare its intent to finance construction of the new, $7.7 million parking deck at 191 Lawrence St. in Marietta.

A design and build contract was awarded to Choate Construction in October. The deck, which is being built just off the Marietta Square in connection with the new Cobb Superior Courthouse, will include approximately 534 parking spaces. Of those, 304 will be dedicated to County government employees and 230 to the general public.

To fund the project, the board is expected to approve the issuance of tax-exempt bond obligations and/or Build America Bonds, which are issued through the Association of County Commissioners of Georgia's Lease Purchase Financing Program.

Also during the board's Tuesday morning meeting:

* Cobb County Water System will be presented with multiple awards. The Cobb Water System was selected 2009 Water Distribution System of the Year by the Georgia Association of Water Professionals, a non-profit organization made up of more than 5,000 members. GAWP also gave the Northwest Water System Facility and the R.L. Sutton Water Reclamation Facility the Platinum Award, given to facilities with five or more consecutive years of permit compliance. Northwest has had eight consecutive years, while R.L. Sutton has 10.

* Mountain View Regional Library will likely be approved to accept an Early Literacy Station, a computer system designed to help children ages 2 through 10 with literacy and computer skills, from the Cobb County Public Library Foundation.

* Lockheed Martin will receive the GAWP 2009 Industrial Laboratory of the Year award for the lab's quality assurance program.

So what's new? Have you noticed the county seal emblazoned on your county truck mud flaps? Don't get me started. To begin with, we don't need no stinkin' county seal! There is no respect for the taxpayer because so many voters don't pay no stinkin' taxe$!

I agree with surface concerns for the new parking lot, but to estimate $14,000 per parking space is not how much the government will literally spend making each one. The project as a whole must meet government regulations and pay workers in accordance to laws that private entities do not have to follow. These working laws and building regulations that public spaces must follow is what adds up the price because the public, as a whole, will be using the space and not only a private entities.

Try $14,419.48 to be exact, and what a waste of the tax payer's money! But money is cheap these days for the government to borrow, just like Greece!

Does anyone else wonder why it costs more than $14,000 per parking space?
