Sound the trumpets and protect the turf, schools rush to spend your money

Now that Judge Stephen Schuster has ruled for the CCSD in allowing SPLOST taxpayer money to be spent on Astroturf for area high schools (even the ones that already have turf), I want to see the bands and cheerleaders practicing on the turf. And the Thespian club should be allowed to use it, and the Frisbee golfers. I’d like to see Key club and Interact hold flag football fundraisers on it, and while we’re in this caring, sharing mood, let’s also make sure some of those math classes currently being taught in moldy, sub-standard classroom trailers set up on the taxpayer funded Astroturf as well.

But I won’t hold my breath. Even though Cobb school officials, including principals and coaches, made a big deal out of the fact everyone would benefit from the Astroturf, plenty of people in this county know that was all a big lie.

For example, the week of March 24 a guy named Bob Penner spoke at a meeting of Lassiter booster parents. He represented the Lassiter Endowment Athletic Fund committee and he started off his little talk to parents with disparaging remarks about Pete Borden, the east Cobb man who filed suit to stop the turf expenditure. According sources, he also spoke negatively about the MDJ, but then moved on to say parents should not worry because as soon as the judge freed up the funds the schools would move quickly.

Mr. Penner reported at the meeting that South Cobb schools would get their turf first “for political reasons” but not to worry because East Cobb would be next, and they (the LEAF) planned to spend their fair share “as fast as possible.”

Lassiter, as most readers know, is the school where Superintendent Fred Sanderson was principal for years and where many Glover Street department heads (like the embattled Rick Grisham of Transportation) hail from.

But back to the meeting.

Penner explained to parents that LEAF has a ten year plan. Part of that plan is that since Lassiter already has Astroturf, they’ll install the SPLOST turf on their back field and probably move the lights currently at the football stadium over there, planning for new and better lights at the stadium.

He emphasized they would have to be very selective on who would use the new turf, and gave Harrison High as an example of turf that hasn’t been cared for properly.

“We don’t want to look like Harrison,” Penner tsk tsked, adding that they plan to prevent that tragic possibility by charging people a fee for all activities on the fields.

“We have to PROTECT the turf,” he said, and sources could not believe, after the District made the case in court that every student would have an opportunity to benefit from the turf, they were being told just the opposite.

“We were highly encouraged to keep people from using the field,” this blogger was told.

Which just goes to show, once again, even though so many people thought they won in the deal, it’s just a few people, mainly coaches and elite athletes, who’ll benefit from this outrageous luxury expenditure, the latest in a series of CCSD boondoggles.

Varner Elementary was supposed to get a second entrance/exit into the parking lot with spolst funds. With only one entrance/exit it is a traffic nightmare as well as unsafe in case of an emergency evacuation of the grounds. It did not get the second entrance. Instead it got a left turn lane into the parking lot. So much for designated splost funds. As for no paper towels in the student bathrooms, supposedly paper towels were removed because the students were stuffing them down the toilets causing clogs.

Football parents play by different rules. At Wheeler we had a player get arrested twice for drug related offenses but since he was a football player and his dad was president of the booster club he was back in school and on the field in no time. I read how we need to cut teaching positions but we continue to allow football parents to manipulate the system for personal interest. I guess they learned personal interest come first from the best manipulator of all; John Crooks.

The turf at Lassiters stadium was installed by the booster club. It is a product that is not mainstream and is falling apart. They are limiting the use on their own poor investment. The field that CCSD will be instlling should be open for public use.

Yes, those SPLOST funds were voted on, but that was bach when our economy was not this bad, teachers weren't being furloughed and laid off, and there was a plan to get rid of trailors (moldy ones at that). That was also back when kids didn't have to worry about using copy paper, or have to use their clothes to wipe their hands off after washing because of no towels in the bathrooms. Is artificial turf REALLY that important??? Boy people you have your priorities screwed up.

It seems to me that the unsuspecting parents in Cobb have once again been the victims of smoke and mirrors. We supposedly have lower taxes than say Fulton County because we have parents fund extra activities through booster clubs. Then we enact SPLOST. So goes the tax argument. We are told the turf is good and costs less over time to maintain than grass. OOOPs, maybe not so much....we need to charge for usage to maintain the turf? Then we have powerful members of foundations controlling the spending of booster funds and field usage. For those of you who thought Daddy Ball ended in high school, think again. Who wants to bet that the members controlling this have "super star" kids? When you think of high school athletics, you hope the experience will teach your child about team, ethics, etc... Not even close. Anyone who has had a kid on a team knows that certain players never get the same treatment for drug busts, fights, whatever. A Pope football coach was taking money directly for play time...at least everyone could get in on that deal. Until the parents of the not so good players (or not so powerful parents) quit funding these booster clubs and SPLOST taxes, nothing will change. It is sad that the well meaning and unsuspecting parents provide the monies for these manipulative leaders. Accountability and open published meetings and plans would be a start. Oh yeah, what am I thinking....the school board isn't even held to that standard.

Get your facts straight. South Cobb must have turf installed early on because their practice field is having a building built on it. There is no where to practice...football or band or cheerleaders.

Fair and Square, what is your point? Ms. Armstrong didn't even take a position on the turf here. She simply reported on a meeting and said she hoped to see all the students get an opportunity to play on the Astroturf, the same way Sanderson, the board, coaches, principals and attorneys claimed they would in court (was that under oath or was that not under oath?)

Methinks you are still fighting a battle you already won, but now you just cannot stand to know that people are going to continue to follow up and hold the CCSD accountable.

Is is possible that the era of taxpayers allowing the CCSD and board to get away with murder has ended? I'd say so. Taxpayers are tired of getting ripped off for their high taxes, and school taxes in Cobb are the majority of our property taxes...spent by a bunch of clowns who either can't stay awake or can't stop running their mouths.
Why did I move to...

So I had children while living in Georgia and wished for them to attend a quality school... so I moved to Cobb County and the economy went into the toilet. If I had known that the School Board was so ill advised and casual with SPLOST funds, I would NEVER have voted for them! I had my primary school children coming home saying how excited the teachers are for the new SPLOST fund and how it will help them out.

Well here is my question...if we can vote it in, can't we vote an admendment to either end the BS Astroturf Fund and have the money go towards teacher salaries, class room supplies, or even PAPER TOWELS in the restrooms! I know each time go into the student restrooms there are NO paper towels.

Did Mr. Penner state exactly where he gets the authority to determine how and when the taxpayer money for artificial turf will be spent at Lassiter? The Cobb School District should be responsible for the expenditures not a school's booster club "LEAF" committee.

As a parent of a high school student and supporter of organizations outside the athletic department I intend to demand time on the new turf field for those other groups. The principal, coaches, and football boosters are in for a fight if they think they are going to commandeer the fields by placing their own lights around it and charge a fee.

I guess Ms. Armstrong forgot that these SPLOST funds were voted on fair and square by the citizens of Cobb County. At no time was it hidden as to what the $ would be used for. I wonder if she also thinks George Bush stole the election during his bid for a second term?
