Is there a need for a ban on pit bulls, other aggressive breeds?

Cobb and the metro area have been the scenes of numerous serious dog attacks on people recently. Most notoriously, a 5-day-old infant was killed when attacked by her family’s pit bull. Aside from the stupidity of allowing your pit bull anywhere near your baby, do such cases point to the need for a ban on pit bulls, and perhaps on other aggressive breeds as well?

Ban on pitbulls

Yes.

Why should a citizen worry or feel threatened by these animals in particular? The headlines describe it all. These dogs are prohibited from being in certain city parks, so there is an obvious problem. I worry for my child when we are walking our dog by houses with Pit bulls because those killing machines go completely wild. As a citizen, tax payer and human being I should not have to worry about my own safety because of Pit bulls. My safety and my child’s safety come first, not the carelessness of the owner and the atrocities of its Pit bull. If these dogs are prohibited from being in certain city parks because they are too dangerous, and the city recognizes it, why can’t the city merely extend the prohibition to include the whole city? What’s the difference?
