Marietta hires head football coach ...
Bigbucks wrote - Wow, now we are paying the coaches bonuses, but since they are from gate receipts no one will question it. So, let's ask what the net gate receipts were the last few years and extrapolate what kind of bonus he will be making and put that out for the general public to look at. And for those teachers complaining about salary, $56k? I know a lot of people that would be very happy with that and the potential of well over $100k with bonuses! Hope he really teaches!
Lovesthiscommunity wrote - I have a feeling the faculty at MHS will embrace Coach Burton more than any other coach they could have found. The classroom teachers will be the biggest winners, wait and see. What a great hire for the search committee. I don't care if he has a losing record, this guy is a class act and a winner. We may lose a lot of kids up front who don't buy into the full program, but those who stay and try to achieve his goals will be better for the rest of their lives.
Very impressed wrote - How can you not be excited over this guy? Solid background, successful record, tremendous experience and a stickler for discipline, academic achievement and community involvement! If the players will buy into his program and the fans will give him the support he needs (we will) this guy will be a winner on the field and in the community. Did you catch his respectful nod to Friday in his interview - this guy is first class, great job, Coach Hall and Ms. Colburn.
BigBlueCaddy wrote - Let me be the first to officially extend an online welcome to Coach Burton and his family. I look forward to seeing his team Friday nights at Historic Northcutt Stadium/French Johnson Field. Kudos to the search committee for finding and securing a quality coach.
MHS probing drug use allegations ...
MHS Mother wrote - My MHS child was there, but not a part of this incident. However, you need to look at students from other schools, too. I won't name the school, but kids from other Cobb schools were involved. We need to make sure all the schools involved handle this in the same manner, because as we all know, some schools like to look the other way.
Truth hurts wrote - Well let's get super-heroes Chief Hatfield and Cobb Solicitor Barry Morgan on the case. Waste some more taxpayer dollars on prosecuting children!
Marietta High's turn wrote - Why is the school investigating whether any wrongdoing occurred when MHS Mother confirms this drug use took place? Word on the street is some students have already been suspended.
A reader wrote - If we teach our kids to do and act the right way, what others do should not affect them. I know a child who went on this trip and they told me prior to the trip that some kids were bringing items they shouldn't have. This child didn't like it and didn't know what to do. I said to stay away from anyone that wasn't doing the right thing and tell an adult if you saw anything. I asked who was chaperoning. They said only the teacher. Is that enough adult supervision for that many kids on an overnight trip? When it's in the Atlanta area, why an overnight trip that gives too much freedom to kids that don't need it yet? I hope the parents of these children discipline appropriately and don't just dismiss it as "all teens do this." I've heard this statement so much with the Walker incident and it's an excuse. There are too many kids that are doing the right thing. Let's not discount them by lumping them in the "all teens" category.
D.A. King column: Observations on the crime of illegal immigration ...
Robert in California wrote - Let's be honest. There are jobs that most native born Americans won't take. In good times, few of our native born will work in the fields for the wages offered - even if they exceed the applicable federally mandated minimum wage, because other less dirty and back-breaking jobs that pay better are available to them. In bad times, the unemployment checks (based upon the "good times" wages) frequently pay better than field work.
Old vet wrote - Amnesty is dead this year? I hope so, but the La Raza gang is still marching in D.C. next month to try to force it thru. Every day the health care battle goes on, the less chance of amnesty there is for invaders. I agree with King. John McCain would have had amnesty done by now and our job situation would be even worse.
Robert Johnson wrote - Americans have become "sub-sub-citizens" in their own country. King has said it perfectly. We The People have had enough. (Contractors) Turner and Zebra should be banned from any public work.
