Now wrong time for artificial turf at schools

DEAR EDITOR:

As we are all very frustrated with our hard earned tax dollars being wastefully spent in Washington, we also have to suffer the same things at our local level. We provided millions of federal tax dollars to the banks for their so called bailout only to have them turn around and give millions of dollars for executive bonuses. Their excuse is that they are contractually bound to provide these excessive bonuses.

I say hogwash. Washington bureaucrats must think we are all dumb, but we know when we are being taken advantage of in a huge way. Now we are hearing that our hard-earned county tax dollars for SPLOST III are going to be used to put artificial turf on 16 playing fields in Cobb County.

First, I am wondering how many of us were aware that there were plans to use our tax dollars for artificial turf when we voted for SPLOST III?

In this economic downturn, this is an absolutely terrible time to even consider wasting our tax dollars on such a frivolous idea. I see trailers at almost every school in Cobb, and now they want to spend money on artificial turf? This is another bureaucratic boondoggle at our local level. I think we should all be outraged. I know I am.

I see where teachers are being required to take more furlough days, and to hold down pay raises. But we are told that SPLOST dollars are different, and can't be used for such trivial things as teachers' pay.

So let's spend millions of dollars on artificial grass. And the statements coming from the county to back up this spending plan defy logic. First they say that $16 million was initially set aside for this, but because of reduced SPLOST intake, they now have reduced that to $800,000 for each field, but say that it will only cost $500,000 to $600,000 to do the job. So they will let each school keep the extra huge amount of money to do with whatever they want. That is irresponsible thinking.

We keep hearing that in the long run it will save money, but again, we all know that is an absolutely bogus argument. I read that the schools pay anywhere from $30,000 to $80,000 per year for natural grass upkeep. There are plenty of lawns around the county that are as large as a football field and I don't think they are paying $30,000 per year for upkeep. If this were true, and I doubt that it is, I would think that the ticket sales to all the football games and other events should be used for field upkeep, and not our tax dollars. What are they using the gate income for anyway?

And to top it off, since three schools already have artificial turf, we are going to give the tax money to them anyway and let them spend it on whatever they want. Is this craziness or what?

There are so many things wrong with this plan that it defies common sense. I suspect that since football is king around the county, there are powers-at-be who want this to happen. It's kind of like bureaucrats building bridges to nowhere, just to further their own cause, and not at the best interest of the country, or county in this case.

The bottom line is that we need to make sure that the next time any SPLOST vote comes up in the future, we absolutely vote against it. I am already planning my sign for my yard for the next SPLOST vote "Remember that turf? Vote NO for SPLOST."

I voted FOR SPLOST. WHY? Because of each line item in the proposal. I CHOSE to vote for this as my kids are in Cobb County Schools and I wanted their equipment and schools to be upgraded. YES, that includes the football field at Sprayberry (my son) and Kell (when my daughter is older). If you were out there watching football you would have seen the dustbowl at Osbourne in 2008 when we played 'away'. In 2009, you would have seen the mud and puddles (and heard about games being cancelled due to water on the field, etc.). There is a high cost to maintain the fields and you cannot escape this fact. My yard? I don't spend a dime on it. Not important to me. As for the Mr. Borden, he doesn't even pay school taxes so where is his standing to sue? I read the proposal and voted FOR this money to be used. If you don't like it, don't vote for it. IT PASSED, get over it. Now our tax money is being wasted on thousands of dollars in legal fees (ask a litigator-the average price to bring a lawsuit to trial is over $5,000-$10,000. Could a teacher have used this money in the classroom?). Bottom line, after the laptop debacle, they clarified where every penny would go; that's why I voted for it (and why it passed, I guess?). To use a silly sports analogy, stop "Monday Morning Quarterbacking"!

To "been there". What you do not seem to comprehend is that it does not matter what was spelled out and what the voters knew, or did not know, the fact is that it is illegal to use SPLOST funds for that purpose. Voters cannot vote to do something illegal. Think about it.

To "to rhinehart". You think not huh? The law is pretty clear that SPLOST funds cannot be used for improvements in athletic stadiums too, but, unless

Borden's lawsuit stops them, they will do just that. And don't think, for one minute, that they will hesitate to further break the law by funneling funds to pay off that debt.

Sorry, it is not my theory. It belongs to a former

School Board Chairman, who started the whole thing. Do your homework.

right on one, dead wrong on the other, sure they knew splost would get greater support with something in there for those whose kids play outdoor high school sports, makes perfect and smart sense. second, dead wrong on paying off Kell debt, been made clear from the very start and beyond that money can't be used for that. You need to go create some other conspiracy theory, this one won't float!

This thing is even more devious than it appears on the surface. There were two reasons the turf thing was put into SPLOST 3. First, they needed to make SPLOST attractive to the "athletic supporters", and secondly, they needed a way to pay off the loan one booster club is laboring under. You can bet the farm that, if this thing goes through and that school is handed eight hundred G's, it is going to retire that debt, one way or the other.

Most taxpayers are so gullible that they fell for the "It's for the kids" line. BS, it is not for the kids. Two things are going to happen. First, somebody's pockets are going to get lined and second that loan is going to get paid off with our money.

The taxpayers better hope that Borden's lawsuit prevails.

If you, Mr. Heaton or anyone else out there, did NOT know that part of the SPLOST money was to be spent on artificial turf at Cobb County Schools, then you either just started reading the MDJ, just moved to the area, or you have a short term memory loss problem. It was discussed extensively in the paper. Also, citizens in GA wanted everything spelled out in the SPLOST as a guarantee that our local officials would do exactly what was voted on & that is what is being done. In fact, there has been a court case concerning the CCSD SPLOST when laptop computers were about to be purchased with SPLOST money that was not in the SPLOST. As a result, laptops were not purchased per the judge's decision. SO, whether you are for it or against it, artificial turn is a done deal. You can't ask it to be spelled out and then decide, NO we don't want it that way. Move on to the something that can done or changed.

Seems to me that the royality at the BOE have lost touch with reality.

They are increasing class sixes, claim they do not have enough money to pay teachers, but yet find the money to install atrificial turf on football fields.

Excuse me but can you say "RECALL"

If the BOE wastes the money for artificial turf, then each and everyone of them need to be run out of office immediately.

Football ticket sells or gate revenues from football games goes to pay the game officials, police security for out of touch/misbehaving individuals like yourself, and to support the entire athletice department at the school. The CCSD does not provide tax dollars to support county athletics! CCSD provides minimal coaching supplements. Coaches could easily work at QuickTrip and make more money.

CCSD does not support athletics at all. That's 12-15 sports per school. Add to that a boys and girls team, and that is a huge amount of funds that is needed per school to pay officials, resurface gym floors, reseed fields, clean stadiums after ungrateful fans, purchase uniforms, supplement coaches (so they don't have to work at QuickTrip), pay for transportation to and from events, etc.

Please do just a little 4th grade level researc before you ask a silly question.
