One to 4 inches of wet snow are expected to fall today in Cobb and across metro Atlanta, though meteorologists differ on exactly when it will start.
Tom Moore, a lead meteorologist at the Weather Channel, said Thursday afternoon that the flakes should start falling between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. today and will fall for a few hours.
"It still looks like the brunt of the storm will be in the Columbus and Macon areas. But the data we've received in the last 12 hours is shifting things north. This is a well-developed storm, and if it tracks just 50 miles north, we could be in serious trouble," Moore said about 2 p.m. Thursday.
Worst-case scenario?
"Atlanta would get more than four inches of snow," Moore said. "This storm is still that precarious."
Andrew Ulrich, a meteorologist with Accuweather, said his computer model shows the snow starting around 8 or 9 this morning, and ending about 6 p.m.
"It will really pick up in intensity in the afternoon," Ulrich said. "The morning rush will be fine. The problem is going to be getting home." Ulrich said the 50-degree temperatures of recent days means the snow will take awhile to accumulate on the ground.
Moore said the snow will begin west of Atlanta and move eastward.
"Anyone going down I-85 toward Montgomery or Columbus on Friday or Saturday could run into significantly more snow - 4, 5, even 6 inches," Moore said.
Temperatures overnight tonight will be below freezing, so the snow will stay on the ground, and roads could be icy tomorrow morning.
But the sun will come out tomorrow, with temperatures of about 45 degrees.
Said Ulrich, "It is going to be a very wet snow, so that's good for packing. If you can't build snowmen, you can definitely have snowball fights."
"If kids want to play in the snow, they should do it on Friday," he said. "It won't be sticking around long."
