Bigger lesson to be gained from parks bond

DEAR EDITOR:

Katy Ruth Camp reports that Cobb County officials are revising SPLOST estimates lower and scuttling the parks bond initiative due to economic conditions. While I support both actions, there is a larger lesson connecting these stories. For current and wanna-be politicians, I submit this guidance from F.A. Hayek's "The Fatal Conceit."

"The curious task of economics is to demonstrate to men how little they really know about what they imagine they can design."

Valuable government programs require neither special elections nor dedicated funding, as the electorate will readily identify their utility and support them as part of the normal budget. Programs which rely on unique funding gimmicks are likely to fail, as future conditions are certain to change but cannot be anticipated.
