According to Cobb investigators, Jair Garcia Cruz, 32, of Austell, and 26-year-old Jonathan Martinez Tapia wore masks as they forced the mother into her trailer when she returned home from dropping off her 7-year-old son at school around 8:50 a.m. Police spokesman Sgt. Dana Pierce said the men assaulted the mother with a stun gun, tied her up and took her 4-year-old son, Christian Guevera.
The suspects fled the scene in an older white Chevrolet Suburban, police said. Guevera's mother went to a neighbor's house and got help calling 911.
Police released a Levi's Call and subsequent Amber Alert after the incident was reported.
Gwinnett County Police found the boy safe at the Madison Ridge apartment complex, 1121 Indian Trail Road in Norcross, about 4:30 p.m. Thursday. Gwinnett Police arrested several people at that location, and Cobb Police charged Cruz and Tapia after questioning.
Cruz and Tapia have been charged with kidnapping, false imprisonment, aggravated assault, cruelty to children and attempted extortion. They are being held without bond at Cobb County Jail.
"Throughout the day, the kidnappers called the mother demanding money from her in return for her son," according to a release from Cobb Police.
Guevera's grandfather told reporters Thursday that the suspects were asking for $100,000 ransom.
After being found, the boy was immediately taken to Scottish Rite Hospital in Atlanta to be checked out and was eventually reunited with his mother. The mother and son arrived home at 750 Six Flags Road late Thursday night.
According to Cruz's book-in sheet, he lives at 546 Six Flags Road, the same road as the Gueveras. Tapia is listed as homeless.
A man, who would only identify himself as Christian's uncle, told media on Thursday he had heard from a friend that the mother's boyfriend had some involvement in the kidnapping. Christian's father died in 2007 in a motorcycle crash, and the uncle believes that the men accused of taking the child were looking to take advantage of insurance money the mother received following the death of her husband.
On Friday, the mother declined to speak to reporters. A man who answered the door at the Guevera home Friday afternoon and would only identify himself as a friend of the mother, said that the mother and son were doing great and were napping together at that time.
Cruz and Tapia will have their first appearance hearing Monday at 8 a.m. at the Cobb County Jail, Cobb Sheriff's spokeswoman Nancy Bodiford said.
