More events to celebrate black history

COBB COUNTY- There are a number of events planned at local schools in celebration of Black History Month.

The Journal printed community and school events in an article on Tuesday. These are in addition.

Cobb County School District

* Kemp Elementary: Feb. 22 through Feb. 26, traveling exhibit on the authors of the Harlem Renaissance. The exhibit consists of four large murals highlighting African-American writers from 1900 to 1940. Students will create art inspired by African-American artists, which will be on display in conjunction with the murals.

* Dowell Elementary: Feb. 27, 3rd annual black history program at Hillgrove High School at 6:30 p.m., with more than 140 students participating.

* Brumby Elementary: Feb. 26, chorus and step team will perform a spiritual and special step number at Info Mart's employee luncheon. Info Mart is a partner in education.

* Powers Ferry Elementary School: All month long, in addition to studies on African-Americans, students are bringing to life many important African-Americans through the performing arts, using their in-house television channel as well as on stage.

* Lindley 6th Grade Academy: Feb. 23, Black History Talent Program, "I Am Black History" in the Academy Theatre.

* Hightower Trail Middle: Feb. 9 through Feb. 12, a week focusing on diversity, when students who attended the Power Over Prejudice conference at Georgia Tech will present what they learned.

* Wheeler High School: Feb. 16, 17th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Humanitarian Awards Assembly in celebration of Black History Month. Awards will be given to students, faculty, and members of the community who have made contributions to Wheeler High School and who demonstrate those qualities characterized by King. Keynote speaker will be Mr. Keith Horton, director of the Office of Child Support Services, retired lieutenant colonel and a published author. The choral department will perform special musical selections.

* Pebblebrook High School: Feb. 16, "WORDS" (With Our worDs Diversity Speaks), a celebration of the written and spoken word, will be perfomed in the Black Box Theatre from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Students are asked to create of piece of writing that reflects black history such as story telling, poetry or rap for the event.

* South Cobb High: Feb. 26, annual Black History Month production.

* North Cobb High: All month long, every morning, during morning announcements, students will give clues or highlight biographies of famous African-American celebrities and have students guess who the person is. The high school will also have a writing contest.

Marietta city schools

* Lockheed Elementary: Black History Month banner contest, where all students will participate either in the writing of the script, research or the artistic design. Winners will be announced at a Black History Month program on Feb. 26 at 1 p.m., where there will be a guest speaker and inventor, Lonnie Johnson. All staff and students are asked to wear African attire on the day of the program.

* A.L. Burruss Elementary School: Feb. 26, monthly assembly program highlighting Black History Month.

* Sawyer Road Elementary: Various famous Americans will be highlighted on the morning news show by students each day.

* Park Street Elementary: Feb. 26, Black History Month program.

* Marietta Middle School: Feb. 25, Black History Month program.
