MARIETTA - Many east Cobb residents may remember the space next to the Kroger at Johnson Ferry Road and Lower Roswell Road as an old gym with black walls and no windows. Or as a large Chinese buffet before that. But starting Monday, the space at 4880 Lower Roswell Road will officially open as Cobb County's newest and most advanced library, the East Cobb Library.

"I think people will be shocked and very, very happy when they walk in here," Cobb County Commissioner Bob Ott said. "It's a leading-edge library with the most built-in technology out of any of our libraries, and it's wired for the future with Wi-Fi, touch-screen projectors and ample computers."

The East Cobb Library replaces the Merchant's Walk Library, which the county sold for $1.6 million. Ott said the county looked at the cost of acquiring land and building a brand new library, but chose to lease the new space and renovate it to save money. A little more than $900,000 is left after the space was gutted, renovated and furnished, and Ott said the county has earmarked that money for a matching grant from the government to expand or replace East Marietta Library.

"We started thinking about what the role of a library will be in 10 or 15 years, and with the dominance of Internet and growing technology, we're not sure what that role will be so we felt doing this was the smartest thing for us to do," Ott said.

The former library officially closed on January 22, so area residents had to find another library to use for 10 days. The branch manager for Merchant's Walk and now East Cobb Library, Ansie Krige, said all books and staff from Merchant's Walk have moved to the new library, and that they were all excited about the new space.

"Everyone knew we needed something new, and with the windows and lighting, it's just so much brighter and bigger and updated to modern needs," Krige said.

The new library features a teen section, which no other library in Cobb has, with cafe-style tables, a flat-screen television with DVD's and a Wii gaming system available to use, free of charge, and an entire section of young adult novels. The library also features a community room with seating for over 100 people and touch-screen controls on the walls, which is free for any community non-profit or governmental gathering, such as town hall meetings. There is also a large children's room with a Hi-Definition projector and BOSE stereo system, which Krige said will be used for storytelling sessions and movies. Construction began in late August, and details were still being put into place Friday to prepare for opening it up to the public on Monday.

The 16,800 square foot facility is over twice the size of the 8,000 square foot Merchant's Walk Library, and much of the wood work done for furniture was completed by the county's property management team. All of the walls were gutted and new walls were put into place to create other rooms and offices. Windows were also built on the outer walls to bring more light into the facility.

Krige said that the Merchant's Walk Library had an average of 23,000 visitors a month, so she expects that number to continue, if not rise, with the opening of the new library. The library will be open six days a week, Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and closed on Sunday.

"Historically, when you open a new library, usage goes up pretty dramatically," Cobb County Library System Director Helen Poyer said. "We're very pleased with how it turned out and hope residents will be just as excited about it as we are. It's truly been a labor of love, and we're glad to finally share it with everyone else."

I think the new library/location is great. There is a Kroger and UPS store already at the center so I might be able to run a few errands while dropping my kids at the library. Now that the library is in a more spacious building, hopefully the expected increase in traffic to the shopping center will also attract some additional retailers. A J. Crew or a coffee place would complement the library nicely.

Some of the misinformation on here is ridiculous. Johnson Ferry Road connects to one of the most affluent/low crime areas of Fulton County (Riverside Drive area) so the notion that crime is "creeping in" from there is laughable considering there was little to none in that part of Fulton to begin with. If anything, this new location is safer since property values generally rise as you get closer to the river.

And yes this library is about a mile south of the old Merchant's Walk library but understand that this is a well-populated corner of the county. The new location is right in the middle of the Mount Bethel/Chattahoochee Plantation/Indian Hills/Lower Roswell areas which means that it will have plenty of residents to serve. Some of you seem to be under the impression that no-one lives here...

Those few that are complaining definitely don't represent most of us in the area. Mountain View will be closer to me than the new location by a mile but I still plan on frequenting the new library. It's much more convenient to the better shopping venues in the area than the areas further north or west.

Also, where is this notion that crime is creeping up Johnson Ferry coming from? I've seen no evidence of that, and I live off Johnson Ferry near the Chattahoochee. The new library is nestled in one of the nicest, safest parts of East Cobb. The shopping center has certainly seen better days (I'd say half the store fronts are vacant), but that's not due to rising crime, but a poor economy. Perhaps having a shiny new library there will help revitalize it.

I seriously can't believe what I'm reading on here. Some of you East Cobbers are complaining because you have to drive ONE extra mile to get to a brand new library that replaced an overcrowded old one. I would be thrilled if I could drive even three extra miles to get all the amenities that y'all are getting with this new library. Let's keep everything in perspective here - the library obviously can't be right next door to everyone and they built where it be the best use of county money!!

Some of these posts are clearly written by people unfamiliar with the area that probably shouldn't have been using this library in the first place. Walk to the library at Merchant's Walk? From which neighborhood was that even remotely logical? It was bounded by the Roswell Road/Johnson Ferry Intersection! I'm sure some people will be bitter that they have to travel an extra mile to the new library, but for me the added travel time (about 5 minutes) is well worth the extra space and services offered.

I don't have a problem with the new location and I'm glad they're getting more space. My family will be visiting regularly.

Crzymom needs to find a hobby, what with all those "exact" measurements. These are the same kind of folks who, if they won the lottery, would complain because they'd have to pay more taxes.

I think the new facility is a big improvement over the old one. But to each their own -- that's what makes this country so great.

You are right Gwen - Bob Otts neighbors had to write in and say how wonderful it is - the location and the parking lot stink as far as I'm concerned - we used to walk to the library and get our books.

No more of that for sure!

I think the county or the library could probably fund a set back parking area for the library (like they did in Merchant's Walk) using the money saved so that doesn't worry me that much. The new location is a lot closer to those of us around Lower Roswell and south so for me the added space is definitely worth the location change. The old location was definitely too crowded and something had to be done.

I'm sorry. The Merchant Walk location was exactly 3 miles from the Fulton County line using Roswell Road. The new one is 2 miles to the Fulton County Line along Lower Roswell Road and 1.7 to the Fulton County line down Johnson Ferry Road.

See like SD Mom said - too close to two roads out of Cobb County. The East Cobb and East Marietta branch are 5.5 miles apart. Merchants Walk to Mountain View is almost 7 miles. I don't think the new branch will get the use expected being on the outer corner of Cobb County. They may have saved 900k but after paying rent over how many years will that 900k be a loss and not a savings? It is a mile more for me to drive to the new East Cobb branch and over a mile more to go to Mountain View. In driving the two parking lots on Sunday; I will be going to Mountain View - SD Mom was correct there too. Very confusing lot, lots of empty business. Not a parking lot to walk children across.

I was fine with the old location but this new location works just as well for me. The old one was a bit small and cramped so this looks to be a big improvement. I just wish the library could've been next to the new Whole Foods that's going into the current location but Kroger is fine for me most of the time.

I think this location is a far better choice than the busy Roswell/Johnson Ferry intersection for those of us that live in the Mount Bethel area. I've always found it odd that people closer to the other libraries came down to the Merchant's Walk library so hopefully this new location and additional space will mean a less crowded library.

I don't think the first two poster live in the area. The Merchant's Walk library was already one mile from the county line (Roswell) and this new one is also one mile from the county line (Sandy Springs). However, this new one has the added advantage of being in the middle of the area it is supposed to serve. This library is not intended for those that live further west than Old Canton Road (use E. Marietta) or further north than Sewell Mill Road (use Mountain View).

I really don't see anything wrong with the new location. I live in Atlanta CC and had to drive 3-4 miles just to get to the Merchant's Walk location. This new location halves the time and I can do my grocery shopping at the same place while dropping off my kids next door at the library.

The location actually makes a lot of sense to me. The Merchant's Walk library previously had mainly drawn from the Mount Bethel/Paper Mill area, which made the location a bit too far for those that live closer to the river. This location is situated optimally in the center of the area. Those further west have the East Marietta library and those further north can use the Mountain View library. The intersection is busy but less so than the old intersection. It's an improvement, which is great. Can't wait to take my kids there this weekend.

My thoughts exactly SDMom - why move the library 1 mile from from a county line.

Must be located by Bob Ott's house to make it easy for him!

I'm still very unsure of the move. It is at the intersection of two road that are on the Cobb Fulton line. I lot closer to more Fulton County folks than Cobb. That parking lot is a mess that I will not walk my children across. That intersection seems to be a major rush hour clog and confusion for so many drivers. I have seen to many accidents and near misses there. The crime is creeping up Johnson Ferry from Fulton County but we put all that right there and advertise it. I plan on using the main branch or Mountain view not this replacement for mine. May be nice but I think of the safety of my children first.
