Col. Richard S. Wilcox died on Monday, January 25 at the age of 89. Mr. Wilcox was born to Homer and Stella Wilcox in Jackson, Michigan. At the time of his death he had been a resident of Marietta for 50 years. Richard's life was adventurous, full and productive. He enlisted in the Navy in 1938 at age 17 and served on the battleship Wyoming. In 1941 he joined the Marines, and during WWII as a fighter pilot in the Pacific, was awarded the Navy Cross for his heroic efforts to shoot down kamikaze aircraft intent upon sinking a US destroyer. After the war he married Mary Mason, entered the Marine reserves as an aviator, and continued to serve his country for many more years, retiring in 1974 at the rank of Colonel. Richard attended Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, Michigan, and the Atlanta Law School, where he graduated as salutorian of his class. He worked for Lockheed Corporation for 35 years and traveled the world negotiating sales of C-130 and other aircraft to governments and companies in dozens of countries. He was well liked among Lockheed's customers, who respected his military and aviation background and enjoyed his affable yet professional personality. Richard was an avid tennis player into his 70's, and long time member of the Elks Club and American Legion. He served his community on the planning and zoning commission and in many other ways as well. Richard was perhaps best known for his willingness to help those in need. His unselfish advice and support made it possible for many people of all ages to obtain educations, get jobs, start businesses, and survive through hard times. He touched many lives in a positive way, and will be sorely missed. Richard was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Mason Wilcox. He is survived by sons T.M. Wilcox and Dr. John B. Wilcox, and grandchildren Allyson, William, Katherine, Jaimie, Sarah, Kelly and Kathy. A memorial service honoring Richard will be held on Saturday, February 6 at the Mayes Ward Dobbins Funeral Home in Marietta. Visitation will be from 3:00 until 4:00 PM. The service will be from 4:00 to 5:00 PM. A reception will follow at the Marlow House, located next to the funeral home. Arrangements by Cremation Society of the SOUTH in Marietta 770-420-5557.

I first met Colonel Wilcox in 1985. He was having Dinner with his wife at the Western-Zizzler on Hwy.41. He stood out in the crowd as he was wearing his Flight Jacket,See the Navy and Marine Corp wore the same style jacket. Well me being the Aviation buff that I am I approached his table and asked him if he was a World War 2 Navy Pilot OK I had a 50-50 chance of getting this right..NOT.. He proceeded to explain to me that there was 2 kind of Pilots, Marine Corp Pilots and then just the leftovers.I visited him often but moved away and lost touch. What an interesting man to have known.....Semper Fi

I certainly was a pleasure for me to know and talk with Richard through the years. Besides the amazingly courageous and gallant efforts that earned him his Navy Cross, he always provided a sense of humor and fun conversation. He loved Cytyc stock and it did him well I recall. I remember a funny description of some coffee I made him in North Carolina at the Outer Banks....this coffee is like new rope! I've used it many times.
