WOODSTOCK - The momentum changed significantly for South Cobb once it decided to play its game.
Using their suffocating defensive style of play, the Eagles pressured Woodstock into turnovers, bad passes and missed shots to rally from a 10-point halftime deficit for a 58-49 victory in a key Region 5AAAAA battle.
The victory put South Cobb (11-3, 7-3) in a tie with Kennesaw Mountain for second place in the region standings, while the Wolverines (10-6, 6-4) dropped to fourth and sit a half-game in front of Etowah.
Woodstock held leads of 14-10 at the end of the first quarter and 29-19 at halftime, but South Cobb's full-court pressure and stifling man-to-man defense unsettled the Wolverines in the second half.
The Eagles' Jeremy Meyer and Cordell Wilson opened the third quarter with jumpers to start a 14-4 run, capped by back-to-back field goals Morse that tied the game at 33-all with 2:37 left.
South Cobb held Woodstock to six points in the third quarter, and no field goals for 8 minutes, as it took a 37-35 lead entering the fourth period and a 43-35 advantage with 6:48 left in the game after Morse made one of two free throws.
James Reed ended Woodstock's drought with a three-point play at 5:27 to trim the deficit to 43-38. Jonathan Amador's 3-pointer at the 2:50 mark left the Wolverines trailing, 47-45.
Corey Ross answered with a 3 for the Eagles, and South Cobb made four free throws and two field goals over the final 2 minutes to seal the win.
South Cobb outscored Woodstock, 18-6 in the third quarter and 39-20 in the second half, by creating points off turnovers and watching the Wolverines make only 11 of 19 free throws in the game.
"Our pressure defense really got us going in the second half," South Cobb coach Kris Watkins said. "I was disappointed in the way we played the first half. Nineteen points is not how we do things. I challenged the guys at halftime to play our type of game and they stepped up. I'm glad we won."
Morse scored seven of his 10 points in the second half and added a team-high 10 rebounds. Wilson had 10 points in the second half and finished with 13 to go with eight rebounds. Ross also had 10 points, including two 3-pointers, for the Eagles, who will host East Paulding on Friday.
South Cobb's box-and-1 defense limited Woodstock standout Kent Emanuel to 12 points. Alex Templeton had 11 and Reed had eight points and six rebounds.
"I thought that we played a good first half," Woodstock coach Sean Glaze said. "The problem is we had to play the other 16 minutes that were left on the clock. We forgot how to block out, handle pressure and handle the ball, and that's a bad combination."
GIRLS BASKETBALL
South Cobb 69, Woodstock 66 (OT): After Brittany Nash nailed two free throws to put the Lady Eagles on top with 3.9 seconds left, Ciara Young's heave from halfcourt at the buzzer missed the mark.
South Cobb (7-7, 4-6) trailed, 65-63, in the extra session after a jumper from Macie Post. Brittany Nash made two free throws to tie the game, and Sontell Kennedy stole the ball and induced a foul. She made both free throws for a 67-65 lead with 19.1 left, but Post could only make one from the stripe, forcing the Lady Wolverines to send Nash to the line again with 3.9 remaining in the contest.
Kevyn Tracy led South Cobb with 25 points. Nash finished with 14 and Ashley Towns had 10.
Makensie Block and Young each finished with 11 for Woodstock (7-9, 3-7). Brianna Lakes totaled 17 and Skye Rogers had 16.
South Cobb led, 49-39, entering the fourth quarter, but was outscored, 18-8, in the final frame to set up overtime.
