I am glad to see the MDJ's stance on the City of Marietta's proposal to Astroturf Glover Park. In a constantly "growing green" society, I think this would be a drastic step backward to remove grass for something artificial. Though the grass requires care and attention, it, by far, is more aesthetically and environmentally appealing. Aside from concerts, the general public seems to be respectful of the grass and limit their foot traffic to the walks. I think tree and plant experts would agree grass is far more compatible with the trees than artificial grass.
As the courts ruled in 1969, the Glover family no longer has property rights to reclaim the park if the city violates its original deed, which was never their intent, but the descendants of Mayor John Heyward Glover, Jr. are very proud of what Marietta has done with one of its greatest assets. The city does a magnificent job of maintaining the park and I hope they will rethink this proposal.

Marietta has the perfect setting to close off the square,.. turn it into a pedestrian mall = (like Denvers 16th street mall)-- a park setting & tourist destination. Create ONE moving(only) traffic lane around the square, for trolleys & bus & emergency vehicles. Also, two-way bike lane around the square,.. the ONLY parking should be bike racks!! Allow the store fronts, cafes & restrants to expand father out on the sidewalks--& ALLOW umbrellas on tables-- create a walkway full of planters, trees, artwork,.. where the street is now! As far as concerts go,... use your imagination- the run-down neighborhood across from the Hilton would be PERFECT for an natural setting amphitheatre!!! As far as other events,... the square would attract a new sense of mindfulness & people would respect the grounds more, ... if given something to be proud of!
Oh my, where would people park, you say?? Well, there are PLENTY of parking decks,.... & maybe it's time to ENCOURAGE biking as an actual form of TRANSPORTATION!!!!
