School board to stay dysfunctional till after elections

DEAR EDITOR:

I don't understand the purpose for all of the hullabaloo over the Cobb County school board and all of the column inches of print expended in a fruitless effort to teach them how to do their job. Why can't everyone realize that this school board is dysfunctional and nothing short of changing four of the seven board members will change that?

For instance: Much ado has been raised, much time wasted and much money misspent on the manner in which the teachers and staff were surveyed concerning when the school year would start and end in 2010. The truth is the teachers and staff should not have been surveyed at all. I know of no organization that surveys its employees to determine when they would like to work. Those who provide the wages determine that and anyone who does not like their decision looks for work elsewhere.

During the years when I was engaged in the battles of getting my three children educated in K-12 schools there were three rules of engagement that were sacrosanct. We called them the WHAT, WHEN and HOW rules. Simply put: Nothing could be changed in WHAT our children were taught, WHEN they would be taught and HOW the results were tabulated and reported to the parents, without the approval of a majority of the taxpayers who paid the wages of all those involved in the teaching. Anyone trying to violate any of those rules, was asked to leave.

The single-most important function of any school board is to oversee school administrators, in public, to make certain that the WHAT, WHEN and HOW rules are being followed to the letter and dismiss those who do not chose to do so. This school board has allowed this school administration to violate all three of those rules. When school boards do that, its members can move on to other more lucrative engagements, while parents are left to live with the lost years in the education of their children.

You're not alone here, in thought or in deed. Mr. Stoll, I second the aforementioned advice about taking a closer look at things. EyesOpen is perhaps more optimistic than realistic about the whole county. Really, do take a look for yourself. The MDJ may seem to harp on things overmuch, but be glad that there is a source to voice the shenanigans happening on Glover St.

Mr. Stoll, it's actually NOT the role of a school board to oversee school administrators. It's about setting policy and big-picture oversight. Amidst all of the political sturm and drang, test scores are going up, graduation rates are going up and lower-performing schools are making big strides. The board needs to focus on its actual role, rather than micro-management and distrust.

Mr Stoll,

I appreciate and respect your opinion but please understand without the "column inches of print"

the vast majority of Cobb citizens would be ill informed of the degree of corruptness the school board and its appointed management represents. Please go to the blogs on some of the articles and get a first hand view of how employees are being treated and taxpayer monies are wasted. You seem to be an educated gentleman so judge for yourself which are valid statements and which have been ordered by management clones to run damage control. Some of these employees have no other recourse without retribution but the MDJ so as you said join their efforts to correct these injustices or replace the current board. I cannot even communicate my real name to you for fear of retaliation.

This board needs to go (exception is Alison) it is time to focus on education and not the whims of the Super. If our Super had our kids' interests at heart he would follow Cindy Loe and denounce this crazy math and whole language approach to reading. Return to basics and educate our children.

Kudos to Mr. Stoll. There is an irony that the school board has amply demonstrated that they have not learned anything. They are demonstrably unable to modify their own behavior. They are tragically remiss in performing their duties and remain, collectively, clueless. I pray that candidates with the appropriate skills and character step forward in the next board elections because the incumbents, with the exception of Alison Bartlett, must be removed.
