Gonzalez, of Dallas, died Wednesday afternoon following Tuesday's shooting at the Penske Truck Rental in Kennesaw. Although Gonzalez was pronounced dead at 4:50 p.m., he remained on life support for organ donation.
Like the other two victims who were killed and two still listed in critical condition, Gonzalez leaves behind grieving family members and friends. Van Springer of Woodstock, who was killed, had been married for 37 years, and Jaider Phillipe Marvlanda, also killed, had been married for 25 years. Of the survivors, one is married with three children and the other is paralyzed.
Queen said Gonzalez, 31, loved his family and had a passion for outdoor activities.
"He loved to hunt, fish, camp and, most of all, watch his two daughters play softball. Words can not describe the love he displayed to his family and friends," Queen said.
Gonzalez was married to Shauna Holbrook Gonzalez, whose brother, Joshua Holbrook, was also a victim in the shooting. Holbrook remains critically injured in the shooting and remains at Kennestone Hospital.
Queen provided the Journal with a photo of Gonzalez fishing during a camping trip last May in Rome, Ga.
"I took this picture right after he told me he had never caught a bass," Queen said. "As the words came out of his mouth, he hooked a nice one. The smile on his face will never be forgotten, and he will be surely missed. May God bless his family in this time of need and may Roberto rest in peace."
Also among the dead after Tuesday's shooting were Van Springer, 59 of Woodstock; and Jaider Phillipe Marvlanda, 43 of Lawrenceville.
In Canton on Wednesday, Cherokee County Sheriff Roger Garrison spoke about Van Springer, whose wife, Barbara Springer, works in administrative services for Cherokee Sheriff's Office. He said the couple had been married for 37 years and have a son and a daughter.
Garrison said his department also got the call about the shooting and Barbara Springer's co-workers knew their colleague's husband worked at the facility.
"We put her in a patrol car and rushed her there," Garrison said. "She knew before she got there that her husband was a victim ... I noticed when I saw her leave in the patrol car, she was already crying."
Barbara Springer said that the accused shooter, Jessie James Warren, had worked at the facility with her husband and had been laid off. She went on to say that he was struggling with "some issues," but would not elaborate.
Of the five shooting victims, all but one worked for Penske.
Jaider Phillipe Marvlanda worked for a Mexican food distributor, El Maizal, and was at Penske Tuesday for service on his truck.
His daughter, Erika Marvlanda, told various media that Jaider and his wife, Mary, had been married for 25 years. The couple had two children together, Erika, 24 and Alejandro, 11.
Two victims remain in critical condition on Thursday afternoon at WellStar Kennestone Hospital.
Joshua Holbrook, Gonzalez's brother-in-law, suffers from gunshot wounds in the abdomen.
Holbrook's father, Bobby Holbrook, attributes his son's survival to the fact that he was shot in the abdomen, and not the head like the other victims.
Joshua Holbrook told his father that the suspect held a gun to his head and pulled the trigger, but it didn't fire, according to WSB-TV. Bobby Holbrook said that the suspect then shot his son in the abdomen after he tried to get away. He said the bullet is lodged in his son's back and that he is paralyzed.
The other victim, Zachariah J. Werner, is still believed to be in critical condition at Kennestone Hospital. Little is known about Werner. Several attempts to contact his family have been made by the Marietta Daily Journal, but as of press time there was no response.
According to information compiled from Facebook profiles, Werner is married and has three children. He and his wife, Jodi, were high school sweethearts and graduated from a high school in Toledo, Ohio. They moved to the Atlanta area from Ohio in 2003.
In a quote on her Facebook profile, Jodi Werner said she is blessed with a wonderful husband and three great kids.
