Irene Lester Haverland of Roswell, Georgia died January 11, 2010, after a brief illness. She was 95 years old and a resident of St. George Village. Irene was born in Greenwich Village, New York on June 11, 1914, the youngest of four children of James Urban Lester and Irene Canavan Lester. She was raised in Brooklyn, N.Y., and spent her childhood summers in Greenport, Long Island where her father was co-owner of Lester & Toner Oyster Company. Irene was a graduate of James Madison High School. She was married to William C. Haverland in 1939 and together they raised five children. A devoted mother she supported her children in all their activities. Irene was an active real estate agent on Long Island and in Marietta, GA., where the family moved in 1972. Irene and Bill were avid golfers and bridge players and enjoyed traveling in their senior years. Irene volunteered her time throughout her life with many community organizations, most recently delivering Meals on Wheels in Cobb County. Irene is survived by her children, Richard Haverland and his wife Rosemary of Princeton, NJ, James Haverland and his wife Judith of Alpharetta, GA, William Haverland and his partner Thomas Saunders of Raleigh, NC, Christine Martinez-Fonts and her husband Alfonso of Washington, DC, and Patricia Haverland and her husband Mark McBride of Madison, NJ. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. She is predeceased by her husband William, brothers William Lester and James Lester, and sister, Regina Rice. Irene's positive attitude, wit, independence and outspokenness will be missed by all. A memorial mass will be held at St. Peter Chanel Catholic Church in Roswell, GA on Saturday, January 30 at 1:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice. Arrangements by Cremation Society of the SOUTH in Marietta.
