Area champions Pope and Kennesaw Mountain will represent Cobb County on Friday and Saturday at the Class AAAAA Team Dual Wrestling Championship at the Macon Centreplex.
The duo will join 14 other schools vying for the crown as part a double-elimination bracket.
Pope, which won its third straight Area 6AAAAA title Monday, was given a favorable draw as the No. 2 seed. Three-time defending state champion Collins Hill garnered the No. 1 slot, pitting the two rivals at opposite ends of the bracket and setting up a potential 1-vs.-2 final for the second consecutive year.
The Greyhounds are making their third straight appearance, and fourth since 2003, at the state duals. They finished third in '08 and runner-up in '09.
"We're excited," Pope coach Jim Haskin said. "It's a great event for the kids, and we're looking forward to wrestling one match at a time and getting to that championship match."
Pope's first-round match will be against Area 2AAAAA runner-up Stephenson on Friday at 10:15 a.m. The winner will face either Brookwood, the No. 6 seed and Area 8AAAAA champion, or Area 1AAAAA runner-up Lowndes in the 3:30 p.m. quarterfinal.
Back-to-back Area 5AAAAA champion Kennesaw Mountain is making its second straight showing at the state championships. The Mustangs were positioned as the tournament's No. 5 seed and will take on Area 4AAAAA runner-up Lovejoy on Friday at 8:30 a.m.
The winner of that match will face off against Area 1AAAAA champion Valdosta, a No. 4 seed, or Area 8AAAAA runner-up Grayson.
Last year, Kennesaw Mountain lost in the first round in Macon and went 1-1 in the consolation bracket.
"We had a tough draw last year (against Centennial in the first round)," Kennesaw Mountain coach Roberto Rivera said. "It was the first time we were there, and I think everyone was a little nervous. This year, I've been preaching to the guys that we have to make a run and make a push to place this time around.
"We've won two (area) titles in a row, and I think we don't get the respect that we deserve. The bottom line is, to back up that way of thinking, we have to go there and make a statement. It's hollow if we don't produce."
Kennesaw Mountain could meet Collins Hill in the semifinals, while Pope would face either Camden County or East Coweta.
"We stay tough on these kids and get on them for these reasons, to perform well at crunch time," Rivera said. "We need guys to step up and now is the time."
The other top seeds in the tournament include No. 3 Camden County, No. 7 East Coweta and No. 8 Union Grove.
First-round winners will compete in the quarterfinals Friday at 3:30 p.m. Friday, with the semifinals following at 7 p.m.
First-round consolation matches will begin Saturday at 8 a.m. with the championship final slated for 7:30 p.m.
