MARIETTA - Marietta Mayor-elect Steve Tumlin and City Council members will be sworn in Monday night before Tumlin calls his first meeting to order.

A reception is set for 6 p.m. in the lobby of City Hall, at 205 Lawrence St. in Marietta. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m.

Georgia Supreme Court Justice Harris Hines is scheduled to deliver the oath to Tumlin, followed by the seven council members as a group.

Tumlin said he intends to place his hand on the Bible of his late maternal grandmother, Harriet Brooks Horne, as he takes the oath. Horne was mother to Tumlin's late mother, Virginia, the first woman to receive the Cobb Citizen of the Year Award. Tumlin's wife, Jean Alice, their three children, two grandchildren and Tumlin's sister plan to be in attendance.

The Rev. Dr. Sam Matthews, senior minister at First United Methodist Church, is scheduled to give the invocation.

The meeting begins with the old council convening to adopt the minutes from its last meeting. The only change on council is that Councilman-elect Johnny Sinclair is replacing Holly Walquist, the latter of whom is not expected to be in attendance. The old council will then adjourn and Tumlin will call the new council to order. The only business scheduled is the approval of committee appointments, said Councilman Philip Goldstein.

Tumlin said he's ready to get to work as Marietta's 54th mayor.

"There's been a lot of talk, and now it's time for action. I'm ready to go," he said.

Oh, just one more thing while I think about it...as for the widening of Whitlock, why not make Polk Street one way until it meanders its way to Whitlock and make Whitlock one way westbouond to the square. I don't understand why no one else has ever come up with that, but it looks like an amicable solution to me. That way no trees or yards on Whitlock need be destroyed. Whatta ya think???

Go Thunder!!! I grew up in Marietta and graduated from the great Marietta High, along with Thunder and others, but moved to Vinings in the 70's until 1998 when I bought a townhome in Smyrna. I am very proud of Thunder and believe he's the one to fill the slot. I also believe Dunaway did not run again because he knew he was through, as in, he would not be re-elected even if he ran. Thanks for bowing out Dunaway. It was about time!!! Great New Year for Steve and the City of Marietta!!!
