A Canton teenager was killed and another injured in a one-car crash that may have been caused by speeding.

Clara Norton died at about 6 p.m. on New Year's Day after the Mitsubishi Galant she was driving left Shoal Creek Road near Canton, according to the Cherokee Sheriff's Office. The car was found in a creek, and Norton, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected.

She and passenger, Jacob Arowood, also of Canton, were taken to Northside Hospital-Cherokee in Canton. Norton, a 2009 graduate of Cherokee High School, died at the hospital. Arowood, who was wearing a seatbelt, was treated for minor injuries.

The crash remains under investigation by the sheriff's office Traffic Enforcement Unit. Public Information Officer Lt. Jay Baker said preliminary indications are that speed may have played a role in the crash.

I reckon rednecks live in Acworth. A seat-belt won't saved anyone from a counter-clockwise T-bone SMASH

i am appalled at anonymous's post and including the word such as "duh" in regards to such a tragedy and loss of a "diamond" as far as I can tell. Mama bear, don't let anonymous's comment get to you, the coward couldn't even include his/her name... that tells you something about their character, speaks volumes doesn't it??

If you know Canton this is a road out of a sub and has many curves. yes she did not have a seat belt on but she also was in walking distance of the home. I guess we will never know why she did not put her seat belt on that day but a comment like Duh! is uncalled for and mean. I hope you never loose someone as close as a child and see them come into this world and then watch them leave in one moment. Sometimes it is better to hold your opinion to yourself and stop hurting people. She was a beautiful girl, smart and going to college and she made one fatel mistake.

Just shows the importance of wearing seatbelts. Teenagers must know that life is fragile no matter what age. I know, I've been there. Seatbelts saved myself and my whole family when I was 16 and a drunk crossed the line and hit us head-on back in 1976. I think about this crash every single day. We were all buckled in and we all survived. The female in the other car who was a passenger had no seatbelt on and is blind. The driver survived but was badly injured. Newer cars are safer with built in crumple zones to absorb energy in a crash and with more use of airbags. Think about it for 2010 and beyond.
