The worst recession in decades has made this season one of great difficulty and stress for many people here in Cobb County and across the country.

One of the best ways to help some of those less fortunate is through Cobb Cares, the program sponsored every year by the Marietta Daily Journal. The way it works is by filling gaps in assistance provided by social service agencies. A screening committee from local agencies identifies the most pressing needs that are not met by private and governmental agencies.

Now in its 23rd year, this fundraiser has made a difference for families caught in a financial squeeze, whether it’s helping a new mother keep her home or paying a utility bill — two of the needs covered by Cobb Cares this season and reported on the front page of the MDJ (using pseudonyms, not the real name of recipients).

Cobb Cares depends on the generosity of Cobb folks who want to give a helping hand to others hit by circumstances beyond their control. All of us know that misfortune can strike anyone and as the saying goes, “There but for the grace of God, go I.”

Why not make a donation this year? Your gift of any amount will help make the season brighter for someone in need. And it’s tax-deductible. Send checks or money orders to Cobb Cares, 995 Roswell St., Suite 100, Marietta, GA, 30060. Thank you.
