Initial reports of a botched burglary at a hotel in Washington didn't get much attention, but in the end, a couple of intrepid reporters and an anonymous source they called Deep Throat brought about the resignation of an American president and changed the face of politics forever. The scandal was called Watergate, and Woodward and Bernstein protected the source of their Washington Post reports for more than 30 years.

Here in Cobb County, Calendar-gate has revealed a new and disturbing glimpse of the true character of our school board members. The bully tactics at last Thursday's public meeting seemed designed to shift focus away from their unpopular early start vote and provide cover for a calendar poll and subsequent investigation that were shaky at best, intentionally pre-determined at the least.

How much more information will come out about this? I'll make an educated guess and say a lot.

But back to the question of anonymous sources.

In journalism, if many people corroborate a source, it's valid, even if the source prefers to stay under cover like Deep Throat. And if the corroboration comes from different departments and locations and the people don't know each other, it's even better. That's the reality. It's a starting point from which to do more investigating, i.e. what Woodward and Bernstein did.

So the school board has its hands full with the pending New Year censure of fellow board member Bartlett, which must feel very satisfying to them.

Meanwhile, what other important business is not getting done?

If they cared to look, I'd point them in the direction of their transportation department, where goings-on in the last year or two make the trumped up investigation over the calendar seem trivial by comparison.

Starting about a year ago, word began leaking out about the state of the department and its fleet, from a wide range of people concerned about bus safety and the morale of those connected with it.

I was surprised to discover there is no whistleblower program in effect for employees, especially as safety is touted as a priority and budgetary concerns make it tempting to cut corners. Reminiscent of other district controversy, drivers, mechanics and support staff, even employees from other departments, are reluctant to give their names.

Before, during and after my BusRadio columns, I heard from people in the know, those responsible for the safe transport of our children every day - but not always about music. I've got dozens of pages of notes on what I'll call the real "loser cruisers" - alleged unsafe, unclean, aged and broken school buses that barely start, won't back up, don't have working speedometers, heaters or defrosters. Ever passed a driver wiping condensation from the windshield, just so she can see out? Ever had that happen while you're driving? With as many as 80 kids depending on you?

I heard also about rushed and reduced safety inspections, possible illegal quick fixes, teamster-like management tactics and intimidation. The associated morale problems are massive, with sources telling me hundreds of drivers are ready to lay down their keys and walk away.

"If we weren't praying people," I was told, "we wouldn't have the strength to continue."

Sweeping policy changes since the well-loved former director, Carol Pitts, retired, compounded by an inordinate number of terminations in the last two years - more than 50 by some counts - add insult to injury this hardship year. I'm told this many people weren't fired in the entire decade before Pitts' retirement, and now the district faces a driver shortage and some are being asked to make double, possibly triple, runs without notifying parents.

There was the bus stop fiasco in August, with seemingly no repercussions.

And district-wide pay cuts add to the mix. Drivers, among the least paid and responsible for getting our kids safely to school - in whatever buses their mechanics can keep running - received a triple whammy: their salary was cut by 2 percent, their step raise was lost and their hours were reduced. There are maneuverings on pensions and health care, I'm told.

Meanwhile, boss Rick Grisham got a hefty bonus for his austerity measures. We haven't confirmed the amount, but have a feeling your socks will blow off when we do.

And with the tragic death last week of little Karla Campos - killed by an elderly driver coming over a rise toward her stopped bus, the urgency of a transportation safety revue seems most crucial. All eyes should be on preventing another tragedy.

I'll be writing more on this in 2010. The details really need to be told. I'm hoping to get answers from someone accountable, but won't hold my breath.

According to Dr. Abraham, the board has serious business to attend to when they reconvene in January.

I agree with D/P, Parents have to ask their children what goes on, on the bus. Is it over crowded, are their many fights, is the bus on time and so on? If so how often.

It is very dangerous out there, it seams more and more car & truck drivers are busy texting and not paying attention to the road.

I have had "128" vehicles run my stop sign this school year, and that was by Christmas vacation.

I stopped counting, but what scares me the most is the drivers that don't even realize where they are while they are talking & texting. As they drive through my stop sign "I blow my horn at them, then I get this shocked "where am I" look from them". This is happening more and more this year. 6 times to me.

I am very serious about my driving and responsibilities in keeping the students safe, I always plan ahead and expect these things to happen. I am well trained but I have to admit I received better training at another district. They just do what the state requires here and thats not enough. And thats why the districts spends HUNDREDS of THOUSANDS of DOLLARS on accidents and liability claims each year. If they trained us better we would be better drivers.

Also I would like to mention I listed my street as a severe problem (as the district requested me to do) but the district has yet to respond and do anything about it. This would be a good question for them.

What are you doing about stop sign runners?

I guess a child will need to get hit before they rethink what's more important "saving time & fuel or keeping the kids safe.

Thanks Laura, for your voice.

PARENTS!!!!! PLEASE LISTEN!!!!!

I am a driver of many years, and I have enjoyed the time that I have spent with your children!!! Guess what? Most of your drivers are parents as well!!!! This is why these issues have been brought to your undivided attention!!!! First of all you have NO idea of how the stress is to get on the bus every morning praying that you get the babies ( Elem., High, Middle) school children to school safely!!! Then to go back in the afternoon and pray again for the same thing!!! I can not count the times that I have had my babies (students) on board and a cement truck or tractor trailer would have come across the yellow line into my lane. Do you or can you imagine the fright that comes over you?! The stress levels that they have us working under is so HIGH that it is a wonder that many have not had strokes or heart attacks. If you knew the real truth it would shock you. But again yes we are in a at will state and we really can not fight back. The sad thing is they know this and use it to their advantage!!!!! And I know that there are some that abuse the system as in every place of employment. And to let you know there are very few of these in our work force!!!! They need to investigate further before jumping the gun so to speak. But I want those people gone not the good and devoted drivers that you have!! LISTEN we as bus drivers are very competant. Yes we have had training and alot of it. But have you ever thought about this? I know what I am going to do on the road as a driver but it is the other people that we pass everyday (ALOT) that we have to guess what their next move is going to be!!!!! Come on people yes I love my job and most of all my babies (my students) when my kids are not happy because of the things that Transpotation is asking us to do and we are so scared to hug a child back when they come to us to hug us!!!Does this explain some of the mess that we are going thru'. PARENTS it starts with us. How many teachers custodians cafeteria workers principals secretaries human resources administration in all departments and board members etc. would you have? If your divers did not bring them the work (as they see it) none of them would have jobs!!!!PEOPLE it does not take a rocket scientist to figure this one out. I guess our community does not realize that their bus drivers are the lowest on the scale. It starts with us!!!! Yes there are those that are favored and I really don't want to go there but the pay really does stink for us drivers. But for myself and others I just keep hanging on hoping that someone will hear and listen to US!!! And we are counting on our parents that really care and not just talkers and then never follow thru'. Laura Armstrong has been an ANGEL sent to us!!

Where were all the employees that wanted to "voice" their opinion?
are you kidding me

January 29, 2010
This is directed to Mr. Bob Daily, and all the other supervisors in Transportation.

Mr. Daily commented last night at the Board Meeting, that if you took a poll of all the drivers, there would be a majority of the drivers who support Mr. Grisham and what he is doing with the Transportation Department. Are you kidding me ? PLEASE, PLEASE, take a Poll. Then let all the drivers know as well as the "Marietta Daily Journal".

If you're thinking its going to be support for Mr. Grisham, you might be a little bit shocked.

Also, when a person is making a Public Comment at a Board Meeting, Maria Life and Mr. Grisham need to make sure they are not camera range, because both of you were seen when this was happening, and it was not very professional, whispering to each other, and Maria patting Mr. Grisham on the leg.

Just my thoughts
You want it !

To Parents of cobb county AMEN and THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU.

All they want is some help and your the ones that can do it!!! Drivers are so tired of people calling us whinners and complainers and disgruntled employees.

If so many drivers have taken the time to voice there concerns then there must be some truth to the stories?

Bus drivers have your child's lives at stake!

just a driver,

You say their raises were for 2008-09. Did they get cut 2% like everyone else for the 2009-10 fiscal year?

Because we got our raises for 2008-09 and then got cut for 2009-2010.

I want the whole truth.

could someone please explain to me how we (drivers and monitors) took a 2% cut in pay and no step raise and our director of transpotation got a plus 9% raise ($7869) from 2008-2009? also our assistant director of transportation got a 5 1/2% raise ($5464) from 2008-2009? also our superintendant got a 9% raise ($18,482) from 2008-2009?

All this talk about hours and pay is nice, but it's the safety issues parents have a real concern about. You all should handle your labor issues, but in the meantime, I want to know why bus inspections are not taking precedence. It would seem management is way too caught up in spying on drivers and buying new equipment for their own use, and putting our children way low on the totem pole, and I resent that as a mother and taxpayer. Who is accountable here? Which manager is going to take responsibility? Have you people heard of Massachusettes?! When more parents find out about this mess, there will be heads rolling, I guarantee it. Cobb parents are some of the most well connected...we are not uneducated idiots, and we can see what's happening here. Look out, here we come.

hey people, I know that in a county south of here that had to take 5 days off and take a 4.5% cut last year with more to come this year. You still get a paycheck don't you? stop complaining or go find a job elsewhere. And wasted dollars, "ruffly" most of your arguments go out the window when you can not spell a simple word.

Thank you ex bus driver.

I would like to know if the laws were broken on the morning we were told to stay on a bus with your field coordinator till an announcement came down from the office.

I'm sure labor laws require employers to provide their with at least a 15 min break after so many hours of work, like maybe 4 hours.

So after working the morning shift 4 to 5 hours why were we held hostage on a bus for another 2.5 hours and told we must wait there until further notice. This was a clear violation of some kind of law.

Many of us were hungry and we had to stay put.

Maybe someone out there who reads this blog may know something about labor laws.

I agree they brake allot of laws here. And it's because they are not trained in these areas.

One example; for years the drivers hand book stated when involved an accident "don't move your bus". When in fact the law states you must move vehicles of the roadway. Why didn't anyone look to see if this was legal? Because they do things without doing the homework.

Those at the top are not trained professionals for this type of work.

It's time the school board brought in someone who is trained, experienced and knowledgeable in all aspects of this business, both dot and labor laws.

dear bus driver,if you think for a minute i was in rick grisham's corner, you better re-read my blog.i have talked up for drivers my entire bus driver career.i have spoken to rick gresham on bus driver morale, and bus safety. He,really didn't want to address those issues.he had his own agenda,to lie to us about giving any thought about bus drivers and the problems they face everyday.so,don't accuse me of giving him any support.also,to the driver that said all i do is complain-if you're a bus driver you know i speak the truth.also, the 74 drivers fired came from rick grisham's own mouth, only he inverted 74 to47 in the mdj.

Hey Mad Red Hatter -

When you sit back and voice your concerns to others, and complain, but don't have the the courage to go the the ones responsible, you can say what you say. When we go and voice out concerns, opinions LOUD AND CLEAR we are spoted as trouble makers. Ricky G. wants everything held in house and not go out to the blogs and public, where he and Warner can controll all of you. Ricky G, was a coach, sub administrater, and did some minor work with a school bus system with less that 100 buses, now he is trying to hand this system. WHO helped him into this position???? Sounds a lot alike Chicago....?????

Public needs to know what is happening, Red Hatter check the latest article in MDJ on the School Board, all of the junk comes down from the very top... Quit kissing up and get real...

There is more to come as they voilated State and Federal Laws.....

another strike against us is coming, another paycut and 3 mandatory furlough days? They are saying Perdue, so far other counties have not been notified as such.Soon a driver who has been doing this for over 30 years will be getting paid at rate they started, they already lost their step raise cause they were driving too long at 25 yrs,,thats a nice reward. It is a proven fact that schoolbus Drivers do have stressful jobs to begin with, that would be just handling day to day traffic and making it priority to deliver children safely. What is going on backstage is unacceptable, yet it goes on, and again lo man on totem pole would be the driver..we are not just drivers, we wear many hats, we are nurses, monitors, babysitters, easy fixes to bus, janitors, the list goes on,,, latest being road crew, we have to chance road conditions to accomodate our higher ups, but they survive this economic crunch cause their hand is in our pockets, we keep losing while they literally grin and bare it, We are the joke if we keep accepting half the pay for same job done on trips, We can fix this, just have to say no, we dont have a phone to call parents, if we are sick or have family sick, we need to take our sick time, if dispatch isnt paying attention to our pleas when we feel endangered, take entire busload into nearest police station if u have to,, turn the tide with intelligent decisions, it really up to all of us,

The district spent ruffly $22,500.00 to send all their drivers 1.5 hours before start time to check roads.

If they would of sent all the field coordinators and stand-by drivers out the evening before for 4 hours, it would of only cost $7,200.00.

What were they thinking? No they were not thinking!

Come on guys; your decision making and thought process is embarrassing.

You have many drivers who are good thinkers and can figure these things out without wasting all the transportation budget dollars. So lets find them!

One of these days the leadership will have to sit down and put together a cost effective plan "in advance" before emergency situations arise. Oh and don't forget to invite some "thinkers".
