Laughter abounds when Christmas comes to Tuna, Texas. Until Jan. 3, Theatre in the Square presents the Suzi Award-nominated show, "A Tuna Christmas."

The hilarious holiday comedy is one of four plays written about the characters in Tuna, a small conservative town in Texas, that were created by Marietta playwright Ed Howard and his colleagues Joe Sears and Jaston Williams. Visit www.greater tuna.com for more.

The Sequel to Greater Tuna, family and community are central to "A Tuna Christmas." The three playwrights, who are all from small towns, relied on their own family experience when writing it. "We drew from people we knew, and we love them," said Howard, who directs the play.

Life gets interesting in Tuna around Christmas when, among other things, the society maven is about to win the yard display contest for the 15th year in a row and retire the trophy, despite a looming conspiracy to get her.

"The characters are so true to life," Howard said.

Featuring Steve Hudson ("All The King's Men") and William S. Murphey ("Room Service and The Poetry of Pizza") who play more than 20 eccentric characters, the play will enlighten its audience on why they love their families.

"It's so appealing because the audience recognizes people they know," Howard said. "We're presenting very real people."

The characters, who take themselves way too seriously, are hilarious, he says, but not to them. And that's the point of the play - learning to laugh at yourself, Howard said.

"What matters is not your own self preservation but what you can do for other people," he said.

"If you could use laughing out loud for two-and-a-half hours, you might want to drop on by. Everybody's laughing. It's gotta be good for you," he said.
