DEAR EDITOR:

I was pulling into the parking lot of my local veterinarian in order to pick my dog up after her exam a few months ago. As I got out I saw a very elderly man getting out of an equally elderly pickup truck. I noticed that he wore a cap with the name of a bomber group that was based out of England during World War II. He was wearing shabby jeans and an equally shabby sweater and an old pair of shoes that had seen better days.

I spoke to him and found out he was a crew member of a bomber and had flown over 45 combat missions before he was wounded by German antiaircraft fire. He walked with a pronounced limp.

I asked him if he was picking up a pet and he said no, he was coming to say goodbye to Kilroy, his dog. He lived alone with Kilroy after adopting him 14 years ago. Kilroy had cancer that had spread to many parts of his body and was in constant pain.

"I want to hold him when they put him down. He shouldn't have to die alone, like I may have to," he said.

The old veteran had to be in his late 80s or early 90s. He probably received a VA pension and probably had spent a lot of money he couldn't spare trying to make Kilroy comfortable. I imagined that he probably got most of his medical care from VA clinics and the local VA hospital. He went in and I had to pick my dog up and take her home. He had already gone back to be with Kilroy and I never saw him again.

The veterans of World War II and Korea are dying and every day there are fewer of them. Many are indigent and depending on the VA hospitals and clinics for their care. And then I heard what I hope is only a rumor and I went ballistic when it leaked out that the Obama crowd are thinking of closing most, if not all, of the VA medical care facilities and putting these veterans on Medicare alone, no matter how badly they needed care. I hope it isn't true. It had better not be true or some liberal lawmakers will have a real election fight on their manicured and callus-free hands. It won't happen if we let our anger and outrage be communicated to these liberal congressmen and senators. Let your voice be heard as loud as mine will be. Throw these rascals out next year!

...this is an UNTRUE RUMOR. Colonel Cooper is just playing the role of innocent bystander by passing it along while also trying to tie it back to the health care bill. But why stop there Col Cooper, why not also lay it at the feet of other legislation you might disagree with? Sorry Colonel, it doesn't work this way. You own the rumors you spread...and you sully the uniform you used to wear by attaching the branch of service and rank you held while spreading this maliciously false and hyperpartisan rumor.

Mr. Cooper I stated that I would get back to you on this matter and this is what I have found out The Obama Administration is not in the process of discarding Vets. They are opening new Vet. Hospitals and upgrading the current ones. The past President did have as a part of his cost saving measure the down grading and closing of many Vet. Hospitals and the removal of Vet. benefits from many Vets. The current Administration in is the process of reaching out to many vets, this include homeless vet, that is something the past Administration was unwilling to do or try. I know that I can go on and on about the past failures to the past administration but I now know that this current adminstration is trying to help and they are not just throwing the vets out. You know I look at what the current State Government is doing to Vets and that is a crime in any country. Mr. Cooper look into this matter as I did and you will find that the people that are crying foul with this current administration are the same ones that messed up every thing in the first place.

My husband died in 2006 from agent orange that he came into contact with in Vietnam he was given 1 yr. but died 5mo. later. The VA was wonderful to us both and made sure he was in no pain and received his pension pronto. However social security was a totally different story. They was given a letter from his doctors stating he only had a few months to live but he still never received one penny after all the years he worked and served his country. This was his and he died never seeing it.

Patriotic - unfortunately by the time the next elections are held, the majority of voters will have forgotten what was donein 2009. Such is the mentality of the American voter. Most are only voting for those that promise them "something for nothing". And for the rest of you, how nice that you are so sure what is in this health care bill, who will be hurt, who helped, etc, when most of the politicians, by their own admissions, don't know what's in it. And Ralph, if rumors have no place in real debate, jut how do you know what are rumors and/or lies without relying on your leftist friends to tell you. I am sure we can all depend on them to tell the truth.

Mr. Cooper, as a veteran of two wars, for this country, I also hope this rumor is not true so I have started to research this matter and hope to report back to you as to its truthfulness, as for the rest of the naysayers’ I say walk where that old VET has walked see what he saw then tell me about this nations health care for vets other than that just shut up because that old guy did something that you were to weak or afraid to do.

They have already cut veterans' benefits folks. Now you have to qualify financially to receive care - you have to prove you are poor. When they enlisted or accepted a commission, they were promised free medical care for life if they stayed in until retirement. No longer - if you do not have insurance with your current employment, do not qualify for Medicare yet because of your age, and you job pays you above the poverty limit - guess what, you are a veteran without a safety net.

I think that if the health care bill passes and cuts back on veterans care the democrats had better start holding on to their seats with both hands because they will be booted out! The presidency will be lost to them for years. Actions have consequences.

wow so, an offhand comment, an assumption, and a rumor and you've managed to reach some rather weighty conclusions. Please, for all our sakes, don't vote.

I heard a rumor and I hope it isn't true that ...

Rumors have no place is real debates. It's sad that the MDJ is filled with "rumors, made up anger, and just downright lies. Mr Cooper please crawl back into your cave.
