DEAR EDITOR:

The behavior of the Marietta City Council is better than any soap opera could possibly be. Not being a Mariettan, the antics they pull have been the topic of entertainment among many who read the MDJ. Now they want to change the oath of office that has been in place almost as long as we have been a country. Their audacity astounds me!

Religion is defined as a belief in a divine power. All religions have some kind of deity, even the pagan religions. In this country we call him or it, God. Atheism is not a religion. It is the belief there is no God; thus when an atheist swears, he usually uses the "affirm," else he is already not telling the truth.

I expect that a police recruit has on his application or an elected or appointed public servant has already stated his or her religious affiliation. If they are certified as an atheist, they will affirm, else complete the oath as stated. Political correctness is becoming America's society number one enemy, and this council seems to be leading the fight - in its usual wrong direction.

Van Pearlberg has suffered a brain fart shortly after being returned to office by God-fearing voters. He can be recalled until he is well enough to correctly serve the people who entrusted him to this job. Perhaps this action should be considered as punishment for Van Pearberg, and a shot across the bow for others considering similar lame actions.
