KENNESAW - Kennesaw State University appears to be one step closer to partnering with the Atlanta Beat professional womens soccer team.

George Olney, assistant athletic director for external affairs at KSU, sent out a press release stating that an important announcement will be made at noon Tuesday at the Owls Nest training facility in Kennesaw.

The team is expected to announce it will be playing its home games at KSU's new soccer complex that is being built on the east side of Interstate 75 at Busbee Parkway.

The Atlanta Beat is the Women's Professional Soccer league's newest addition, and will begin its season in a little more than four months. There has been talk for several months that the team would make the KSU facility its home for all of its home games, but nothing has yet been confirmed.

The team conducted an open tryout last Saturday, and owner Fitz Johnson and head coach Gareth O'Sullivan have been steadily filling vacancies, both within the organization's staff and roster.

The Cobb County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved the construction of an 8,500-seat soccer stadium and intramural fields at the Kennesaw location on July 21. The KSU Foundation requested the approval after it purchased the 88 acres of mostly undeveloped land near the intersections of Busbee Drive and Big Shanty Road for $15 million last fall.

At the July meeting, the board removed a stipulation that activity on the fields and in the stadium must be limited to KSU-related activities. This opened the door for the stadium to be used by the county and other athletic organizations, which further fueled speculation that the team was planning to choose Kennesaw as its home.
