Are we a Christian nation? Marietta Councilman the Rev. Anthony Coleman asserted last week that we are. The matter came up after Councilman Van Pearlberg suggested the oath of office required of new city police officers should be amended because it includes the phrase, "So help me God," and because in a increasingly diverse community the city stands to lose out on good employees whose religious beliefs, or lack thereof, might preclude them from swearing that oath.

That prompted Coleman to interject, "When people make a binding oath they need to know how it lines up biblically with the word of God. Marietta has had that oath of office in place for years. It goes back to we are a Christian nation."

Are we a Christian nation? And if so, should our laws and customs be changed or enhanced in any way to reflect that?
