MARIETTA - The mother spearheading the effort to oust Dr. John Crooks from the Cobb school board moved forward in the recall process Friday when 119 signatures were submitted to the Cobb Board of Elections.

Eastvalley Elementary School mom Carrie Welkis is among the neighbors who objected not simply to Crooks' push to erect a 150-foot cell tower at Eastvalley Elementary, but to the way he went about approving the tower.

"Specifically, Dr. John Crooks did not engage our community, as he promised regarding assessing the community support for the cell tower. He also lacked integrity and honesty by not keeping his word," she said.

Crooks declined to comment on the matter.

Welkis said it's important to note that the recall is about more than a cell tower. The charges against Crooks include intent to mislead the public, lack of constituency engagement, violating the Georgia Open Meetings Act and conduct unbecoming of an elected official.

"The recall is about the public speaking out and no longer tolerating special interests and political agendas prevailing over the greater good of our society," she said.

There are a number of steps in the recall process. After garnering the 100 required signatures, there is a court hearing, followed by the requirement of obtaining signatures from 30 percent of the active voters in Post 6, which Welkis estimates at 14,000.

"Sharon Dunn (director of the Cobb Board of Elections) stated the Board of Elections has five days to verify the signatures and John Crooks has four days to file for a hearing in Superior Court to appeal the grounds for recall. I would expect to hear from either or both parties by the end of next week. I am sure Dr. Crooks will try to contest the grounds," she said.

Dunn said a recall is an "infrequent practice" in her experience.

"We have never had one successfully conducted in my 31 years here. To the best of my recollection, in the last five, maybe eight years, we have had one, maybe two petitions filed for verification, but none have ever been verified as valid; therefore, a recall election has never been called," Dunn said.

But Welkis says if California voters can recall Gov. Gray Davis, as they did in 2003, east Cobb voters can recall Crooks.

"I am personally very motivated by the events of the past few weeks. I have had hundreds of people reach out to me, personally, offering their support to the campaign as well as identifying with our cause. We are gaining more momentum every day," she said.

Welkis has received some criticism from anonymous commenters, but she says it doesn't bother her.

"Criticism never bothered me too much; there is no personal gain in this for me and deep down I know I have a moral responsibility to do this. This is about our community and our right to be treated fairly, in an open an honest governance," she said.

Accompanying Welkis to the elections office Friday was Carolyn Warner, a grandmother who lives next to Eastvalley. Warner said Welkis is not alone in the effort.

"I want Dr. Crooks to know that we as the citizens of his district will no longer be silent," Warner said.

"The position of Cobb County school board member should be one of integrity. Dr. Crooks lied to me and others in my neighborhood. Then tried to deceive us by not placing the cell tower on the published agenda. This type of leadership will no longer be tolerated," Warner said.

Please make typo correction.

Why doesn't someone go after the other board members, and the superintendent who did the same thing as Crook. Holli Cash is a real estate tycoon who feels she can use her wealth and connections to monopolize the school system. Why are constituents from posts 1,2,3,4, and 5 remaining silent and not helping get the job done in ridding the members presently serving on the board.

The relevant legislation requires at least one of the following grounds for calling a recall election:

1) an act of malfeasance or misconduct while in office,

2) violation of the oath of office,

3) failure to perform duties prescribed by law, or willfully misusing, converting, or misappropriating, without authority, public property or public funds entrusted to or associated with the elective office to which the official has been elected or appointed.

I say each board member has violated one or more of the above. Get rid of the members on post 1-5. Crooks is not alone in the scandal. Report them to the authorities!!!!!!!

I want to commend Ms Welkis! Let this be the first of several recall intiative (Abraham, Crowder-Eagle, and Cash). How can people who do not live in the voting post help out?

Although I no longer live in Cobb County, it is so good to see the citizens getting involved and refusing to put up with elected officials who do not represent the people. I believe we will begin seeing this more and more, not just on the local level, but also on the state and national level. Americans are finally losing their apathy now that it has become apparent that we are being led down that slippery slope into socialism against the will of the majority of Americans. Kudos to Carrie Welkis and everyone who signed the petition.

Where do I sign up to help with this recall? Crook has a history of turning his back on the people that look to him for support. I've experienced that first hand. He and his type give Christianity the bad rep that it has these days. Also, please remember that there was a quote from him about this cell tower that said something along the lines of him doing as he wants to regardless of what those that voted for him want. I am sure it is in the MDJ archives if it were needed. Thanks for pushing to bring decenctey back to our government. Enough already of his type holding positions that require the same honor that this country was founded upon. . If he were so sure of his choice being ethical and decent he would not be refusing comment. The next play in his playbook, like every crooked politician, is that he will submissively apologize and expect us to be stupid enough to forget about this whole thing. Get rid of all School Board members that support him. Get rid of those that voted for the extended school year, too. They don't care about us or our precious kids. This will just create more dependency on the State to take care of our kids for more days of the year. The school system is bad enough already. Why make it longer? Have they thought of the financial impact this will have on families and how it will cut into time spent with your kids? No, why should they. They have a bigger agenda. Start with Crooks and remove them all. We need morally stable people in these positions and not people that have no respect for the people they were elected to serve. They ignore the fact that they work for us and we pay their salaries…we are their bosses and not special interest groups. If you follow the money you will probably see some things that happened with this issue that deserve prosecution, too. It is always about the money with these people.
