Time for board's Abraham to move on

DEAR EDITOR:

The last time I wrote to the MDJ was about how I felt Marietta Square needed a good scrubbing. I am glad to tell you that my opinion has changed and the Square looks great these days. I am excited about spending time there over the holidays.

I am writing again to state that now the Cobb school board needs a good scrubbing. I saw the four school calendar options and did not like any of them. What are these people thinking? Board chairman Dr. John Abraham appears to not be a man of his word. What kind of doctor is he? I suspect he is a spin doctor or a flip-flop doctor. I was saddened to see the photos of a lady at the podium being approached by a Cobb police officer. I understand there needs to be time constraints on speakers, but please! It appears the woman in question has more support than this board.

Who from this board is going to care for my child while his mother and I are at work on all of these breaks? Dr. Abraham, what does it tell you if you have to call for security when a lady starts to speak? Time for you to move on.

Cannot agree more with this... the board has made a big mistake here. Many people who had no interest in what the board did will now come out against them. Any hope they had of making things better will be lost (not that they cared about the majority of their constituents).

Silver lining will be more people involved and we will only have to deal with this new calendar for a year.

The relevant legislation requires at least one of the following grounds for calling a recall election:

1) An act of malfeasance or misconduct while in office,

2) violation of the oath of office,

3) failure to perform duties prescribed by law, or willfully misusing, converting, or misappropriating, without authority, public property or public funds entrusted to or associated with the elective office to which the official has been elected or appointed.

I say get rid of board members on post 1, 2, 3, 4

and 5.
The Real Point

The real point is that children need routine. They crave it. Younger children are upset when they are shuffled off to a different place for a week every 3-5 weeks. Older children will be left home alone or at pop-up camps where who knows what type of supervision they will get. Of course schools are not babysitters. They are there to teach the children. But they cannot teach the children if the children are not there. It is much easier on the children to have one summer schedule for 3 months and one school schedule for 9 months. Easier on parents, sure. Who wants to shuttle the kids different places all the time, fighting traffic, leaving early, working late to make up for the downtime? But more important, easier on children. That's the point-it's about the kids.

To think before you speak

It is called entrepreneurship - camps and daycare will pop-up to help parents - the community will adjust.

the sun will come up tomorrow!

El Fiero, you missed the point. It's not about HAVING child care, it's about the frequency and timing. As the balanced calendar proponents are all fod of pointing out, it's still a 180-day calendar. The problem is that it's much easier and frequently less expensive to find childcare for a 10 or 12-week stretch in summer than to have this on-again off-again craziness.

Whine Whine Whine - you cannot make everyone happy all the time.

some just hate change - no matter what kind it is!

Not buying the day care issue, nor the cost issue - try another one.

Dear Brett

You had your child now you are responsible for taking care of that child. School is not a babysitter. The school system did not remove the number of days from the calendar like Fulton, you don't have to get someone to watch your child any more days - frankly they are spread out more so that you can budget for the weeks instead of being hit with all the costs at once.

As a dual working family, we are very happy with the calendar. But then we budget are fiscal responsible and want our kids to be with us as much as possible - you see we feel completely responsible for our children

The school Board long ago decided to have year round school. And the most recently elected Board members evidently lied to get elected. No wonder there is no faith in public officials these days.

It used to be a plus for teachers to have summers free to go back to school themselves to get more advanced degrees. They didn't, and still don't, get paid enough to make it possible. They did it because they love teaching. Now our illustrious School Board members punish good teachers by eliminating one of the benefits of their profession. (No time for further schooling, nor decent salaries.) Instead, they get paid less AND have days cut. It's no wonder good teachers are leaving the profession. No one has their backs these days.

Couldn't agree more. Currently, we're working on scrubbing Crooks off the board. Maybe we should cross post lines and see about getting rid of some other board members.

Since when is school a childcare system? Bottom line, it's not. Parents are responsible for making childcare arrangements whenever school is not in session, whether it's the week of Thanksgiving, the last week in July or a late September break. Public schools are not and should not be considered public daycare centers, despite the spoiled parents.
