Veterans Day is a national holiday honoring all veterans and commemorating those who are deceased. Formerly known as Armistice Day, it is observed annually on Nov. 11, the day on which the armistice ending World War I between the Allies and Germany was signed at Compiegne, France. As history notes, it was signed "on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month."

After World War II, the name was changed to Veterans Day. This year marks the 91st anniversary of the occasion.

Here are some events happening around Cobb County on Wednesday.

Marietta

The fifth annual Veterans Day Parade, sponsored by the Marietta Kiwanis Club and the city of Marietta, will start at 11 a.m. at Roswell Street Baptist Church and proceed to the Square.

William T. Nesbitt, Major General, Adjutant General of the Georgia National Guard, will serve as the parade grand marshal and keynote speaker during a noon ceremony on the Square.

Kennesaw

The city of Kennesaw, in conjunction with American Legion Post 304, will host a free lunch for veterans from noon-2 p.m. at the Ben Robertson Community Center, 2753 Watts Drive in Kennesaw.

Acworth

Smyrna
